Safe Ski Slopes in Switzerland’s Engadin

There were significantly fewer accidents on the slopes around St. Moritz and other well-known ski resorts in the Engadin, one of Europe’s highest valleys, during the 2008/09 winter season than the year before. This continues the positive trend that has been evident in the Engadin, in the canton of Graubünden, for several years. Dieter Bogner, head of marketing at Bergbahnen Engadin St. Moritz AG, attributes this development to more than mere chance, citing several key reasons why the ski slopes in Graubünden and the rest of Switzerland are particularly safe.

Safety on Swiss Ski Slopes

On the one hand, many ski resorts in Switzerland, including the one here in St. Moritz, have worked closely with manufacturer Palmer since autumn 2008. The company has developed a special ski designed to reduce downhill speeds, Bogner says. Not only in the Engadin but also in many other ski resorts in Switzerland, slopes have recently been specially prepared for “leisure skiers,” with reckless skiers unwelcome, explains the marketing expert from St. Moritz. According to Bogner, another reason is the excellent condition of the slopes in the Engadin and the consistently good snow conditions over the past few winters. Last but not least, Bogner also has a word of praise for the ski tourists, whose exemplary and particularly considerate behavior in the Engadin last winter helped contribute to the positive statistics.

Naturally, the ski hotels in St. Moritz and the surrounding area are also pleased with the statistics; they could hardly wish for better—and above all, free—advertising for the Engadin and Switzerland. In the winter of 2007/08, there was one accident for every 17,000 downhill runs; last winter, the number of safe arrivals at the bottom increased to nearly 22,000 per accident.
