Transalp mountain bike tours

Hikers and cyclists, especially mountain bikers, have now taken over in the Alps, while the last ski lifts are gradually closing for the next few months. The mountain biking season in the foothills of the Alps may have started back in March, but the real challenges are only just beginning for cycling tourists.

Alpine passes – Transalp tour

In the coming weeks and months, ambitious mountain bikers will be taking on the highest Alpine passes, such as the Reschen Pass in Tyrol. Complete crossings of the Alps by mountain bike are also very popular, better known in the scene as Transalp tours. The popularity of these Alpine crossings is largely due to the Transalp Challenge, founded by passionate mountain biker Uli Stanciu, which attracts several hundred amateur and recreational athletes from across Europe to the Alps every year.

Tourist infrastructure

In addition to the sporting challenge, the Alps also offer infrastructure perfectly suited to tourism. Hotels, guesthouses and other accommodation line all the major mountain passes in Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland. Quite a few hotels can officially call themselves bike hotels, guaranteeing mountain bikers special services such as secure storage for their bikes or nutritious, vitamin-rich meals tailored to athletes. On the German side, the regions of Chiemsee, Tegernsee and the Black Forest are suitable starting points for a Transalp mountain bike tour. The gently rolling terrain gradually gives way to more mountainous country, allowing the body to adapt step by step to the increasing strain.
