Skiing holidays for experts in Taos (New Mexico)
Taos Ski Valley in the US state of New Mexico is a destination for skiing holidays for experts. The German-Swiss ski pioneer Ernie Blake founded the Taos Ski Resort in 1956. Although snow cannons are still used at the start of the season in Taos Ski Valley, the ski area receives an average of more than 7 ½ m of snow per year.
More than half of the runs are black slopes for expert skiers. There are many dangerous, narrow rock chutes in Taos Ski Valley. This ski area is one of the most challenging in all of North America. Snowboarders, however, are out of luck here. Snowboarding adrenaline rushes are off limits: they are not allowed to ride here.

By now, 12 ski lifts have been built with the help of Native American workers from Taos Pueblo. The 150-person settlement of Taos Pueblo lies very close to the ski resort. The Native American village is more than a thousand years old and is a World Heritage Site. The Native Americans live in two multi-storey adobe houses. Otherwise, the reservation has no electricity, running water or sanitation facilities. This was the decision of the tribal elders.
It’s a real adventure. Nevertheless, tourism is the main source of income. And it must be exciting to immerse yourself in this seemingly bygone world during a skiing holiday.
And skiing with Winnetou is something different, too! That’s how it seems when the ski instructor, with his noble Native American profile and blue-black hair, carves down the slopes. Yet there really are wooden balconies with geraniums in the Taos ski area. There are also the Edelweiß and St. Bernhard hotels.
