In Taos Ski Valley, you can reach Williams Lake from The Bavarian on a four-mile round trip by snowshoe or touring skis. Winter access depends on snow, road, and trail conditions.

Art, Pueblo Culture, and Visiting Hours

The Harwood Museum of Art was founded in Taos in 1923. Its collections and exhibitions tell the story of art in Taos and northern New Mexico in depth. The permanent collection includes the Agnes Martin Gallery, an installation of seven paintings. Conservation and exhibition planning can affect collection details; if you specifically want to see this installation, check the museum’s current notices before your visit.

The Millicent Rogers Museum houses more than 7,000 objects and presents the diverse heritage of the Southwest. The Couse-Sharp Historic Site includes the early 20th-century homes and studios of E. I. Couse and J. H. Sharp, founding members of the Taos Society of Artists. The site includes gardens, a chapel dating to the 1830s, a machine shop and a laboratory from the 1930s, a research center, and galleries with exhibitions. Together, these places span everything from collections to historic homes and studios.

The multistory adobe buildings of Taos Pueblo have been continuously inhabited for more than 1,000 years. Visitors can usually visit the pueblo daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; ceremonies may require closures. So check current hours before your visit. The D. H. Lawrence Ranch also has set visiting conditions: weather permitting, it is open to the public Tuesday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Weather, staffing, and site conditions may affect operations; check before you travel.

D. H. Lawrence wrote the novella “St. Mawr,” the biblical drama “David,” and parts of “The Plumed Serpent” during his stays at the Kiowa Ranch. Taos Plaza is the center of the Taos Historic District. Locals gather there for live music and farmers’ markets, while visitors browse shops and galleries. Because event dates vary, don’t plan on live music or a market without checking the schedule first. San Francisco de Asis Church is an active 18th-century parish; through Ansel Adams and Georgia O’Keeffe, it became an icon of modern art and a distinctive landmark of Taos.

Views and Trails along the Río Grande

La Junta Point overlooks the confluence of the Red River and the Rio Grande and is wheelchair accessible. Check access conditions before setting out. The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge spans the river at a height of 650 feet. A trail runs along the gorge rim from the parking lot on the west side of the bridge; check parking and trail access conditions before your visit.

The Taos Valley Overlook is a 2,600-acre area for non-motorized recreation. Its interconnected trails are suitable for mountain biking and hiking, as well as horseback riding. The Rift Valley Trail forms a nine-mile loop there. These are different ways to explore the area; the loop provides a specific distance for planning. Orilla Verde extends for several miles within the gorge south of the Taos Junction Bridge on the Río Grande. The Taos Box has Class IV rapids. If you are interested in this stretch of river, have current water conditions checked by an expert.

Winter Activities and Local Planning

Taos Ski Valley offers year-round hiking on trails suited to different fitness levels. Individual trails may close seasonally. By contrast, the trip to Williams Lake explicitly depends on winter snow, road, and trail conditions. Keep these differing conditions in mind when planning activities for specific days.

The North Central Regional Transit District operates a free shuttle between Taos Regional Airport and the Town of Taos. Since transit services and routes can change, check the latest information before your trip. Northern New Mexican cuisine is also part of Taos’s character: try red and green chiles, as well as the “Christmas” and “caribe” combination on enchiladas, tamales, burritos, and cheese fries. This lets you plan cultural visits, trails, and local food as different focal points for your trip, while keeping visiting hours and changing route conditions in mind.
