Summer Circus Highlight in the Hochkönig Ski Area

The nearly 3,000-metre-high Hochkönig towers majestically above the ski area that bears its name. The mountain itself is not served by ski lifts. At its foot, an extensive, relatively snow-reliable network of linked ski areas connects many lower peaks.

Dienten, Maria Alm and Mühlbach are ski resorts with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. The ski area offers plenty of variety. The extensive Hochkönig slopes are ideal for a family ski holiday. Maria Alm’s Aberg area offers the widest range of runs. Beginners can easily avoid the challenging north-facing slopes for more advanced skiers. The fun park is a hit with children, while snowboarders are drawn to the well-maintained terrain park.

Hochkönig is a skier’s paradise. Numerous practice lifts and the gondola-chairlift start in the centre of town. The area is also very diverse. Depending on your skiing ability, you can choose gentler or steeper terrain on the same run. Towards Mühlbach, easy to intermediate slopes wind through fascinating scenery. Between Dienten and Mühlbach, fast, long runs beckon. The black run by the Zachhofalm chairlift and the Mühlbach valley run are more challenging.

The Hochkönig ski area is also very popular for summer holidays, with opportunities for horse riding, hiking and mountain biking. The stunning Alpine landscape, with its mountain pastures, peaks, meadows and forests, has plenty to offer. It is well worth exploring this picturesque region, considered one of the most beautiful in Austria.

Children are a top priority here, and there is a special surprise for them at the end of August. Zirkus Zapp Zarapp is in Mühlbach from 25 to 29 August. During these five summer days, children aged 6 to 16 can step into a world of circus magic. At what may be the highest-altitude circus in the Alps, they can experiment, learn routines and rehearse, all under the guidance of qualified circus educators. Meanwhile, parents can enjoy the breathtaking scenery. At the gala performance, the children get to show off their tricks to an audience of around 400.
