Ski Mountaineering at Lake Achensee
In ski mountaineering, mountains are climbed in unprepared terrain. Unforgettable experiences in unspoiled nature are driving the sport’s growing popularity. It also trains endurance, stamina and agility on both the ascent and descent. The number of ski mountaineers in Austria has thus risen to more than 600,000. Ski mountaineering competitions are now held in 33 countries around the world.
The Rofan Mountains on Lake Achensee, a popular destination for ski holidays, are the setting for a special championship. Ski mountaineers will gather in Maurach for the Rofan Xtreme competition on February 16. The alpine ski touring race starts at 1,860 m at the Rofan cable car station. It features unprepared terrain with 4 ascents (3 boot-carrying sections) and 4 descents. The youth and junior categories have only 2 boot-carrying sections and 2 descents.
