Koasa Cross-Country Skiing in Tyrol

The annual Koasalauf is a huge event in Austria. It is part of the Euroloppet series, the 12 top events in European cross-country skiing. Around 2,000 cross-country skiers from approximately 16 countries take part. The Tyrolean Koasalauf has a long tradition at the Wilder Kaiser. The famous Kaiser Mountains also gave the event its name. Among mountaineers, they are known as the “Koasa.” They are among the most beautiful landscapes in Tyrol.

The 36th Koasalauf starts on February 9 in St. Johann am Wilden Kaiser. The competition runs until February 10. The majestic two-thousand-metre panorama provides a dreamlike setting for this cross-country skiing highlight.

Some famous names are taking part in the Koasa, too. Christian Hoffmann will start as the defending champion. His event is the 50-kilometre skating race. Cross-country skiing star Mikhail Botvinov will compete for victory in the 42-kilometre classic race.

Other highlights include the Junior Marathon and the Koasa Light. Both are being held for the first time. The Koasa Light starts on February 9 in Kössen, Tyrol, in the Kaiser Mountains. It is ideal for skiers who find the Koasalauf too long. The event covers 20 kilometres of skating. Times can be checked online.

The Junior Marathon also starts in Kössen and likewise covers 20 kilometres of skating. Skiers born between 1990 and 1992 start ahead of the 36th Koasa. Finally, the youngest participants, born in 2001 or later, take part in the Supermini Koasa on February 9. This makes the Koasa a family festival with a fantastic atmosphere
