Berchtesgaden National Park on a Summer Holiday

At 2,713 m, the Watzmann is Germany’s second-highest mountain and the emblem of Berchtesgaden National Park. Königssee at its feet shimmers blue-green in summer. An incredibly rich world of flora and fauna is at home here. The ibex has found its place, and the golden eagle proudly circles overhead. Even the increasingly rare edelweiss has a home here.

Germany’s only alpine national park

Germany’s only alpine national park, Berchtesgaden National Park, has existed here since 1978. Its 210 square kilometres invite visitors to hike across expansive alpine meadows and through mountain forests. But the park’s history actually goes back much further. As early as 1910, the border region of Bavaria with Austria was declared a protected area for plant life. Berchtesgaden National Park was one of the first protected areas in the Alps. Today, UNESCO has recognised the Berchtesgaden Biosphere Reserve. The natural paradise of Berchtesgaden is, of course, better known as a ski area.

Berchtesgaden National Park

But in fact, a summer holiday with hikes in the Berchtesgaden Nature Park is an unforgettable experience. The tranquillity of nature and the discovery of countless rare animals and plants are what make a summer holiday special. And one highlight is the fascinating, majestic flight of the golden eagle. Children, too, can enjoy craft and play activities amid glorious natural surroundings. The region is very family-friendly. Berchtesgaden Nature Park offers dramatic contrasts in its landscape. Even short hiking trails pass through entirely different vegetation and climate zones. From romantic alpine pastures to the rocky deserts of the high Alps – it’s all here.

It’s an unforgettable experience in both summer and winter. So be sure to pack warm clothing as well as plenty of drinks for your hike.
