Tourmalet, famous for ski holidays and the Tour de France
The Tour de France passes through the popular Pyrenean ski resort of Tourmalet. The Col du Tourmalet was included in this famous cycling race as early as 1910. Back then, there were still wild bears in the Pyrenean pass. Today, cyclists, hikers and skiers are drawn to the mountain scenery. And, of course, so are spectators of the Tour de France. Bagnères-de-Bigorre, at its foot, is also famous as an elegant spa town. It lies in the Pyrenees National Park. Skiers and summer visitors alike are drawn to the picturesque landscape.

The Pic du Midi is not far away. The summit can be reached in about a two-hour hike. France's largest Pyrenean ski area, Tourmalet, is very close by. Haute Bigorre has plenty to offer, from the Gailleste equestrian centre, La Bigorre golf course and thermal baths to wonderful hiking and cycling trails and attractive ski slopes. Everything skiers and summer visitors could wish for.
Barèges, on Tourmalet's western slope, is a picturesque ski resort with village charm. La Mongie, on the eastern slope, has a more modern, sporty and versatile feel. Ski accommodation is right next to the slopes. Skiers can reach the 2,877 m-high Pic du Midi (Midday Peak) by cable car. There is also an astronomical observatory at the summit. In summer, the hiking trails are free of snow.
Cauterets Pont d’Espagne is considered the Pyrenees' largest alpine and cross-country skiing paradise. The trails pass through a landscape dotted with lakes on the way to Lac de Gaube. At 3,298 m, Vignemale is considered the highest mountain in the French Pyrenees. An apartment in Cauterets is ideal, close to the slopes for a winter ski holiday and to hiking trails for summer walks.
Queues are rare. Beginner and family runs are located at Pla d’Adet (1,700 m). Espiaube and Soum de Matte offer suitable runs for more advanced skiers. Blue and black runs are found at Vallon du Portet (2,400 m), where snowboarders can also enjoy themselves. Arnaud Marchais's Nunayuk dog-sled station is said to be the highest in Europe.
The Pyrenees really are paradise for skiers, mountain bikers, hikers and nature lovers.
