Oberstdorf: a ski holiday paradise with summer events
Oberstdorf is one of Germany’s most popular ski holiday destinations. But there is plenty to enjoy here in summer, too. For example, Germany’s southernmost half-marathon takes place on May 25. This mountain valley race has been held for 28 years.
More than 600 participants are expected, including runners from Austria and Switzerland. The start, finish and award ceremony will take place at the Kurpark in the centre of Oberstdorf. Cheering spectators will line the 21 km course to encourage the runners. In 2007, the winner completed the course in a new record time of just 1 hour and 11 minutes.

The half-marathon is considered Germany’s most beautiful scenic run. The route passes through the pedestrian zone and then heads towards the Nebelhorn cable car. It winds through breathtakingly beautiful, romantic valleys, past the lovely Moorweiher pond and towards the golf course, with unforgettable views of the Allgäu mountains.
The route also leads to Christlessee, whose clear water lets you see right down to the bottom. Christlessee supplies Oberstdorf with water of mineral-water quality!
Oberstdorf, a popular destination for ski holidays, is also known as a therapeutic climatic health resort. The town is setting new standards in healthcare. Germany’s active holiday village launched a successful tourism project. In 2006, the “Germany gets moving” initiative won a tourism award. Oberstdorf offers more than just health resorts and wellness. Its motto is exercise and activity. There is always something going on here.
There are cultural events, too, in addition to the half-marathon. One example is the concert by the Montarana Choir from Cortina d’Ampezzo on June 1. The South Tyrolean choir will enchant audiences against a picturesque Alpine backdrop. In fine weather, the concert will take place on the sun terrace; if the weather does not cooperate, it will be held in the Panorama Restaurant.
The international figure skating competition, taking place from May 29 to June 1, 2008, promises to be exciting, too. For the fourth time, adult figure skaters will compete for victory at the “ISU Adult Figure Competition” in Oberstdorf’s ice sports centre. An interesting supporting programme will add to the entertainment.
