Alpine ski in France is up to date even in spring. And continuous growth of visitors who prefer to spend their holidays at local ski resorts is a great example to prove this statement. Rather well known Tignes is far from being the last in the list of most visited places. Exactly in Tignes the famous Winter X Games extreme sports competitions will take place for the first time in Europe in the period from March 8 – 12, 2010.
X Games competitions were held for the first time in the USA in 1995. The aim was to gather all kinds of alternative sports disciplines and organize high profile competitions with wide media and TV coverage (currently the event’s auditorium is above 58 mln spectators all over the world).
Until this year all extreme sports championships were held in the USA only. That is why hosting such a contest in Tignes is a crucial event. In the course of three days visitor of this popular ski resort will be able to watch performance of such leading world's riders as Xavier Bertoni, Kevin Rolland, Sarah Burke, Mathieu Crænbsp and others. Eight competitions in total are scheduled to be held.
Tignes that belongs to Espace Killy ski area is, perhaps, one of the best French High Alps resorts. It is known as a host of 1992 Olympic Games, World Cup alpine ski rounds and other winter sports championships. Many famous athletes use it as a training ground.
Tignes includes three main centres: Tignes Le Lac, Lavachet and Val Claret which spread from Grand Mot glacier (3,650 m high) to Brevier village which is located at the altitude of 1,550 m. Such location guarantees great skiing conditions during the whole season. Skiing at the slopes of Grand Mot glacier is possible all over the year. In 2008 Tignes was recognized the most sportive French town.
