Poland is certainly not the first destination that comes to mind for a skiing holiday. Nevertheless, Poland has some very good ski resorts where you can enjoy a skiing holiday at an especially affordable price. This makes a skiing holiday affordable for families and people on a smaller budget, too. The most famous Polish ski resort is in Zakopane, where skiing has a very long tradition. There are around 50 lifts in the area around Zakopane, and snow cannons are even used when there is not enough snowfall. Some of the well-groomed slopes can also be skied after dark, thanks to modern floodlighting. Cross-country skiers can enjoy excellent trails, and special routes have been marked out for snowshoeing. International winter sports competitions are also held regularly in Zakopane. In Lower Silesia lies the popular ski resort of Szklarska Poreba, known in German as Schreiberhau. Alongside perfectly groomed slopes, it offers first-class cross-country trails. Although Mount Szrenica is only 1,362 metres high, the climate in this area ensures excellent snow conditions. Another popular ski resort in Poland is Karpacz, which gets quite busy during the winter holidays. At 1,603 metres, Sniezka, known in German as Schneekoppe, is the highest peak in the Giant Mountains. Numerous trails in the Giant Mountains are also marked for snowshoe hikers. The area offers both luxurious accommodation in upscale hotels and simple guesthouses at affordable prices.
