Windham: Slopes, Ski Lessons and Winter Trails
Accommodation in Windham
For a ski getaway in Windham, it’s worth considering the skiing, lessons and off-slope activities separately. Windham Mountain Club provides specific information about ski terrain, lift tickets and ski lessons. There’s also cross-country skiing in a wilderness area, other winter trails and destinations for warmer seasons. This makes it easy to plan your trip around whether slopes, lessons or a second activity are your priority.
Slopes and Ski Lessons
The slopes at Windham Mountain Club cover 1,600 vertical feet and 285 acres of ski terrain. Modern snowmaking covers 97 percent of the terrain. Check current conditions and operations with the resort before your planned visit.
Windham Mountain Club offers lift tickets and lessons to the public. The Ski & Ride School offers snow sports instruction for guests of all ages and abilities; the availability of individual programs may vary. One specific group program is for adult beginners ages 13 and older who are new to skiing or snowboarding. A lift pass is required and must be purchased at the same time as the lesson. If you’re planning to take part, check the lesson requirements and availability with the resort.
Cross-Country Skiing, a Marked Trail and a Summit Destination
Cross-country skiing is permitted in the Windham-Blackhead Range Wilderness in winter. The 23.9-mile Escarpment Trail, marked with blue blazes, runs through this wilderness area.
Another high-elevation destination is Windham High Peak. It rises to 3,524 feet and can be reached from the Peck Road Parking Area. Alongside the long marked trail, it offers a distinct summit destination to consider.
Trails and Activities in Different Seasons
The public, family-friendly Windham Path is a 1.5-mile loop along Route 23, just outside the village of Windham. It passes through meadows and wooded areas, crosses bridges and offers views of the Great Northern Catskills. It also provides the only public access to Batavia Kill Stream in Windham. In summer, the path is suitable for walking and biking; in winter, for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. It’s ideal for leisurely bike rides and walks and is suitable for all ages. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Nearby, CD Lane Park is in the hamlet of Maplecrest, within the Town of Windham. Seasonal swimming is restricted to designated areas and is permitted only when a lifeguard is on duty. Windham Mountain Club’s Snow Tubing Park is in Windham, about a mile and a half from the lodge. Its operation is seasonal and depends on conditions.
For road cycling, Windham Outfitters offers custom cycling routes. Since you should confirm current offerings with the provider before your trip, it’s best to add this option to your plans separately.
Local History as Another Focus
The Windham History Trail leads to historic homes and scenic spots. It adds a cultural and historical perspective on Windham and its surroundings to the outdoor activities. This gives you different options for your trip: slopes and lessons, trails with seasonal uses, or a visit focused on historic homes and the landscape.
