Cattaraugus County in New York State encompasses the rolling foothills of the Appalachians, known as the “Enchanted Mountains.” For a stay, hiking trails, a large state park, and several natural and cultural sites are the main attractions. Winter sports can only be assessed at one specifically documented ski destination; the verified county facts here do not provide general information about lift or snow conditions. So compare an individual destination with your accommodation and current conditions.

Key facts at a glance

Trails in Allegany State Park and beyond

At more than 65,000 acres, Allegany State Park is an extensive natural area. Visitor information lists 18 hiking trails, including three self-guided nature trails. This figure does not indicate which trail is suitable for a specific accommodation. The Pat McGee Trail is a separate project: It connects the city of Salamanca with the village of Cattaraugus for 12.1 miles along a former railroad corridor. If you plan to hike part of the trail, check your entry and exit points and arrange return transportation.

Zoar Valley offers a different landscape, with steep shale cliffs that rise more than 400 feet above the creek. The approximately one-mile-long Valentine Flats Trail descends to the confluence of two branches of Cattaraugus Creek. Terrain, weather, and protection rules are especially important here. Hiking on the gorge floor in the South Branch area on Nature Conservancy property is expressly prohibited. A county web map and signage can help with planning, but do not replace checking which routes are currently permitted.

More natural and cultural destinations

Rock City Park is known for an exceptionally large exposure of quartz conglomerate. The Pfeiffer Nature Center offers year-round programs and workshops on nature, science, and art; check the topics and dates for your travel day. Ospreys nest on poles along West Perimeter Road in Onoville Marina Park. This is a prompt for mindful wildlife watching, not a guarantee of sightings or access to nesting areas.

The New York Amish Trail offers a different kind of outing. Many businesses sell their products directly from their homes; the map can help you find suitable stops. Check visitor guidelines and respect private property. The Cattaraugus County Historical Museum has a research area for family history in the county. Plan a visit based on actual opening hours.

Keep the winter sports destination and accommodation separate

Within the county, Ellicottville has its own accommodation and winter sports page. The link to the town is a guide, not evidence that every accommodation in the county is located on a ski slope. Check your chosen ski area, current lift and snow conditions, and driving route separately. For hiking, nature, or cultural trips, the specific address of the hotel or vacation rental matters too. Price and availability depend on the individual listing.
