Town and Library History

On November 21, 1776, George Washington and his troops passed through Polifly, now Hasbrouck Heights, while retreating from Hackensack. At Washington Place, they turned toward the Passaic. The date, place name, and direction give this part of local history a specific point of reference.

The history of the Free Public Library of Hasbrouck Heights is also connected to civic life in the town. Its original building served as the clubhouse of the Borough League Association, which was founded by civically engaged individuals. The library opened in 1917. It later moved from Division Avenue to Boulevard and Central Avenue, where its new facility opened in December 2003. Its history therefore encompasses both early community organizing and several locations as a library.

Library and Local Events

The library provides exhibition space for artists, collectors, and organizations to present their work to the public. Exhibitions change over time. A recurring fall event is the Friends of the Library fundraiser: handmade wreaths are raffled off each year to benefit the library. If you want to plan your trip around this seasonal event, check the current event arrangements in advance.

A museum pass is subject to certain requirements. Hasbrouck Heights residents aged 18 or older may borrow one with a valid photo ID and valid library card, provided they owe no more than $10 in fees or overdue materials. Reservations can be made online, by phone, or in person. Walk-ins are welcome, but a pass is not guaranteed without a reservation. Eligibility and reservation requirements may change; check the library’s website before making plans.

Another local event in 2025 was the annual competition organized by the Mayor’s Committee on Community Celebrations for festive decorations at homes and businesses. The competition included both private homes and businesses. Together with the Friends of the Library’s fall raffle, it represents two distinct event themes: supporting the library and seasonally decorating residential and commercial spaces. In 2025, funding was approved for new exercise equipment at the southeastern end of Woodland Park, next to the pavilion; installation was planned.
