Clark: Nature, History and Activities
Accommodation in Clark
Explore Clark through its diverse nature and history. At Clark County Wetlands Park, the focus is on the landscape and guided walks; elsewhere, trails lead to fossils, while museums and historic sites offer insights into the history of Southern Nevada. For planning, it helps to distinguish these areas of interest and choose activities that suit your stay.
Nature, Trails and Landscapes
Clark County Wetlands Park covers 2,900 acres on the eastern edge of the Las Vegas Valley. The park includes a 210-acre nature preserve. The acreage figures therefore describe the park and an area within it. Public walks with certified interpretive guides are offered at the park’s Nature Center. This combines a walk with guided interpretation of nature topics.
Trail lengths provide a concrete comparison: the Megafauna Trail at Ice Age Fossils State Park is 0.3 miles long and features life-size animal sculptures. The Big Dig Trail is 1.2 miles long and begins and ends at the Trench K Trailhead. The two trails therefore differ in length; bicycles, however, are explicitly permitted on the 14-mile Wetlands Loop Trail. Red Rock Canyon also offers scenic drives along a 13-mile scenic drive. These drives and trails represent different ways to experience the landscape.
Natural history is another topic in its own right: Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument contains a vertebrate fossil assemblage known as the Tule Springs local fauna. On the Megafauna Trail, life-size animal sculptures offer another way to explore wildlife from the past. If you are interested in the region’s history, you can combine these fossil topics with historical exhibits and sites.
Museums and Historic Sites
The Clark County Museum traces a timeline from prehistory to the modern era in Southern Nevada. It also features a collection of restored historic buildings depicting everyday life in different decades in Las Vegas, Boulder City and Henderson. Heritage Street at the museum showcases restored historic homes that recreate important periods in local history. The exhibit places the timeline in chronological order, while the buildings illustrate how everyday life is depicted across different decades.
Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort preserves the remains of an adobe fort built by Mormon missionaries in 1855 beside a spring-fed creek. The visitor center features exhibits and photographs about the site’s history. The fort therefore offers both the building remains and an exhibit on its history. Spring Mountain Ranch State Park adds to the history theme with living history programs, including costumed role-playing, demonstrations and reenactments of historical events. The park also has trails throughout its grounds.
Planning Programs and Activities
Ranger-led hikes are offered at Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument, where visitors can explore natural history. Pleistocene Palooza is an annual interactive outdoor event for fossil enthusiasts of all ages. Before your trip, check current dates and the availability of guided offerings, as they take place on specific event days.
Water activities are another distinct focus. Marinas at Lake Mead rent powerboats, pontoon boats, fishing boats, houseboats, personal watercraft and paddle boats. If you plan to use a specific boat category, check availability in advance. Day passes or day-use reservations are required for daily access to Big Bend of the Colorado River before 11:30 a.m. from May 15 through September 15. Confirm this access requirement before your visit.
For travel to the area, Harry Reid International Airport offers various ground transportation options, including shuttle buses, limousines and public buses. The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada provides bus service at the airport.
When looking for accommodations in Clark, you can first decide whether nature trails, history, fossil programs or water activities will shape your stay. This lets you plan your trip around your interests without combining the very different offerings into a single excursion theme.
