The landscape, trails, and history take center stage in Kane. The Kane County forest preserve system encompasses more than 23,000 acres of woodland, wetlands, and prairie across nearly 100 sites. The acreage and number of sites may gradually change. The destinations described here have different focuses: from diverse woodland and open-land habitats to nature observation, historic homes, and educational opportunities.

Landscape, Trails, and Rural Heritage

Tekakwitha Woods brings together several landscape types: oak-maple woodland grows on higher ground, while floodplain forest lines the river. Prairie has been restored on former farmland. An oak in Tekakwitha Woods dates to 1864. The Fox River Trail runs along the preserve’s eastern boundary. This makes it possible to consider both a specific trail route and the area’s distinct woodland and open-land habitats as separate aspects of the landscape.

Other trails also pass through diverse habitats. The Great Western Trail runs through streams and wetlands where ducks, coots, and great blue herons nest and raise their young. At Raymond Street Forest Preserve, a tunnel beneath the railroad tracks connects the Fox River Trail with the Elgin Branch of the Illinois Prairie Path. The Riverbend Bike Trail heads south to a natural, eight-foot-high waterfall that plunges into and collects in a clear, babbling stream. Fabyan Forest Preserve is located along the Fox River.

Rural heritage is also reflected in the roads: Brundidge Road lies on the edge of the city of Geneva, creating a transition to the rural surroundings and preserving Kane County’s agricultural heritage. Brundidge Road, Ke-De-Ka Road, and Thurnau Road are designated Rustic Roads in Kane County. This designation applies to the named roads; it does not automatically describe a particular loop or specific visitor route.

Historic Homes and Learning Sites

The Durant-Peterson House Museum offers living history and depicts the lifestyle and furnishings of the 1840s. The Durant House Museum was built in 1843. Pioneer Sholes School is an authentically restored and furnished one-room rural schoolhouse. Its collection includes school texts from the 19th and early 20th centuries, early official Kane County education records, and oral histories about one-room schools. The house and school offer different perspectives: one through home life and furnishings, the other through learning in a one-room school.

Fabyan Villa Museum has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1984. A full tour led by a knowledgeable guide covers both floors. Fabyan Windmill is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Tours explain how it works and take place on Sundays from noon to 3 p.m., from the first Sunday in June through the last Sunday in September. Check the schedule before visiting. This lets you distinguish between a tour of a historic home and an explanation of the windmill when planning your visit.

Nature Observation and Activities

Jon J. Duerr Forest Preserve offers opportunities for hiking and birdwatching in a wooded area. Those interested in wildlife observation will also find a specific connection to birds on the Great Western Trail: ducks, coots, and great blue herons are described as nesting and raising their young in the wetlands.

At Peck Farm Park, hundreds of non-native butterflies fly, feed, and land around visitors. The environmental education playground has eight learning stations. The Interpretive Center offers programs for students of all ages. Nature observation, hands-on learning, and educational programs are therefore available as distinct experiences.

Other activities include horseback riding, archery, and water sports. Big Rock Forest Preserve includes an area for horseback riding. Arrowwood Point Archery Complex offers areas for recreational archery, bowhunter training, and crossbow use. A boat launch at Voyageur Landing Forest Preserve provides access to water activities; seasonal water conditions may affect its use. When planning your time outdoors, keep in mind the difference between the activities described and the possible effects of seasonal conditions.
