Dillon: Winter and Nature Experiences

Dillon is well suited to a stay where you can combine winter activities with nature, water, and culture. For winter planning, the Dillon Nature Preserve is a particularly practical starting point: it is open to pedestrians, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers in both summer and winter. This allows you to plan your stay in different ways if not all travelers participate in the same sport or if they are looking for experiences beyond winter sports.

Winter Trails and Nature at Dillon Nature Preserve

Dillon Nature Preserve offers mountain views, lake views, and wildflowers. Along the trails, information panels cover local history, trees, wildlife, and native plants.

Water Activities and Clear Restrictions

Dillon Marina offers pontoon boat and sailboat rentals. It also provides sailing courses, lessons, and tours. Stand Up Paddle Colorado additionally rents stand-up paddleboards and kayaks. On weekends, Dillon Marina hosts sailing regattas. This provides several documented forms of water sports that differ significantly in their focus.

At the same time, an important restriction applies at Dillon Reservoir: swimming, diving, water skiing, and other water sports involving water contact are prohibited there. Anyone choosing their stay based on water activities should therefore distinguish between the offerings mentioned at Dillon Marina and the activities prohibited at the reservoir. Here, the terms water vacation or water sports do not automatically refer to every form of staying in or around the water.

Trails, History, and Additional Activities

Recreation at Dillon Reservoir includes more than seven paved miles for hiking and cycling within Summit County’s trail system. The Old Dillon Reservoir Trail connects with the lake that supplied the old town with drinking water. This connection combines outdoor activity with a specific chapter of the area’s history.

Another separate activity is available at the Lake Dillon Disc Golf Course. The free public course has 18 holes. For travel groups, this can provide an additional option alongside winter trails, cycling, and the marina’s offerings, without requiring the entire group to have a particular sporting focus.

Music, Market, and Local Character

The Dillon Amphitheater hosts free concerts and community events. In summer, Mountain Music Mondays offers free music there every Monday evening. This regular event adds a clear cultural occasion to the nature and outdoor offerings.

The Dillon Farmers Market takes place weekly at Dillon Town Park. Vendors sell seasonal fruits and vegetables, baked goods, specialty items, handmade goods, and arts and crafts products. Live music is also offered there every Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
