Big Bear Lake combines winter sports with a man-made freshwater lake, a variety of trails, and historical attractions. When choosing your accommodation, it is therefore important first to decide whether you want to focus your stay primarily on winter sports or also include the lake, nature, and culture. The reviewed options differ significantly by season, terrain, and activity.

Winter sports at Snow Summit and Bear Mountain

Winter sports are available at Snow Summit from November through April, weather and conditions permitting. There is plenty of terrain for beginners there, both in the base area and on runs from top to bottom. This is especially relevant when a group has varying levels of experience and a clearly identifiable practice area is important. Bear Mountain is geared more toward visitors to the terrain parks. At the same time, it also offers groomed runs for beginners and experts. Thus, two different focuses exist side by side: Snow Summit offers particularly extensive beginner terrain, while Bear Mountain, in addition to groomed runs, is more strongly geared toward terrain parks.

Lake activities and trails for different daily itineraries

Big Bear Lake is 7 miles long and half a mile wide. From spring through fall, cruises, fishing, boating, jet skiing, and kayaking are offered. The marinas offer rentals of pontoon boats, fishing boats, kayaks, jet skis, and stand-up paddleboards. In addition, scenic excursion boats operate on the lake daily. Those who want to fish will find a body of water known for rainbow trout fishing; fishing charters help beginners learn how to fish. Boulder Bay Park has picnic tables, a pavilion, open spaces, a winding path, and restroom facilities. Launching hand-carried, muscle-powered watercraft from the shoreline is permitted there after inspection and approval by the Municipal Water District. The regulation therefore expressly applies to this type of watercraft and to the required inspection and approval process. Even without water activities, there are several documented ways to experience the lake and its surroundings. The Alpine Pedal Path is a fully paved, 2.5-mile one-way trail along the north shore of Big Bear Lake. From there, there are views of the ski resorts and the lake. The Knickerbocker Creek Multi-Use Trail is a 1/2-mile paved bicycle path and provides non-motorized access to the Village and the lakeshore. The 1,100-foot Happy Hills Trail is accessible and paved, running along a creek; it has picnic areas and a restroom facility. Rotary Park has a playground area for children.

Nature, orientation, and history

The Stanfield Marsh Boardwalk passes through the Stanfield Marsh Wildlife and Waterfowl Preserve and complements the trails around the lake with a wetland-focused landscape. For on-site trip planning, the Big Bear Visitors Center offers free Wi-Fi, public restrooms, brochures, interactive maps, and kiosks. The Big Bear Alpine Zoo is a rehabilitation facility for injured, orphaned, and human-imprinted wild animals. At Veteran's Park, a Memorial Archway with family markers commemorates former members of the armed forces; a Memorial Day ceremony is held there annually. For a historical focus, the Gold Fever Trail is a suitable starting point for a three-hour, self-guided tour through historic Holcomb Valley. On the tour, visitors learn about Big Bear's gold-mining history and enjoy scenic views. Polique Canyon Road leads to this tour. The night sky is also part of the documented character of Big Bear Valley: it is dark enough to observe constellations, meteor showers, and even the Milky Way. This means that a stay in Big Bear Lake can be categorized not only by winter sports terrain, but also by lake, trail, nature, and historical offerings.
