The Municipality of Anchorage’s trail system is suitable for skiing, running, cycling, walking, horseback riding, hiking, inline skating, dog sledding, snowshoeing and skijoring. Compare hotels based on the activities and destinations you want to shape your trip. The trails described range from an easy walk to a long route whose distance is specified for one direction only.

Urban Trails and Expansive Natural Areas

Anchorage has 227 municipal parks and 250 miles of trails within the city. These municipal figures may be updated over time. Chugach State Park lies mostly within the Municipality of Anchorage and covers about 495,000 acres of land. More than 280 miles of hiking trails range in difficulty from beginner to advanced. This means urban trails and an extensive hiking area with varying levels of difficulty are both located within the same municipality.

Hiking Trails and Outdoor Activities

The Thunder Bird Falls Trail is easy, runs for 1 mile and includes boardwalks and viewpoints. The trail offers views of the 200-foot-high Thunderbird Falls. A much longer route is the Eklutna Lakeside Trail, which runs for 12.7 miles in one direction to Eklutna Glacier. Comparing the distances can help you choose between a short trail and a route whose distance is explicitly given for one direction.

Chugach State Park also offers opportunities for non-motorized boating, including sailing, kayaking, rafting and canoeing. Trail and water activities complement each other, so a visit does not have to be all about hiking. Another long hike runs for 23 miles from Girdwood to the Eagle River Nature Center and follows part of the Historic Iditarod Trail.

The trails at Eagle River Nature Center offer mountain views, glacial rivers and streams, and Alaska’s diverse wildlife. At the Alaska Zoo, trails wind through natural boreal forest. The zoo is located on 30 acres of forest at the lower foothills of the Chugach Mountains. These nature experiences also differ in their setting: trails at the Nature Center offer views of mountains and glacial waters, while the zoo has forest trails.

Coast and Parks

The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail runs for 11 paved miles along the coast of Cook Inlet and connects Downtown Anchorage with Kincaid Park. Kincaid Park is a 1,500-acre natural resource and special use area in West Anchorage, with access to the Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge. Park facilities include a biathlon range, a multi-use stadium, a disc golf course, an archery range, a lake and soccer fields.

These places offer different options for planning your day: the paved coastal route, trails in larger natural areas or the various facilities at Kincaid Park. Kincaid offers a particularly wide range of landscapes and facilities, while the Coastal Trail focuses on the route along Cook Inlet.

Cultural Offerings and Seasonal Planning

The Alaska Native Heritage Center combines exhibits with seasonal offerings. The Hall of Cultures uses dynamic media and cultural objects to share knowledge about Alaska’s Indigenous peoples. Additional exhibits explore contemporary art and important historical stories from the community.

The summer 2026 program included a live cultural program every day, with presentations, demonstrations of Alaska Native games and dance performances by Alaska’s Indigenous cultures. Guided tours to six traditional village sites around Lake Tiulana were also scheduled daily and lasted about 60 to 90 minutes. A free round-trip shuttle bus between Downtown Anchorage, Midtown Anchorage and the campus was also part of the summer 2026 offering. Check the schedule before traveling, as times may change.

Café Di’eshchin at the Alaska Native Heritage Center offers coffee, sweet treats and other dishes. The food selection and seasonal opening hours may change. If cultural offerings are an important part of your trip, you can check the dates and shuttle schedule for your travel dates and plan your day accordingly.
