The 25 hectares of vineyards in Chexbres descend towards the lake. The Lavaux Vineyard Terraces extend for around 30 kilometres along the northern shores of Lake Geneva. Their terraces continue to be used and well maintained to this day.
Landscape and Viticulture
Chexbres offers views of a network of marked paths leading towards the lake. Paths through the slopes of Lavaux provide panoramic views and feature benches and rest areas. Educational panels along the vineyard paths explain viticulture, appellations, grape varieties and work in the vineyards.
The winemakers of Chexbres produce wines under the St-Saphorin appellation. Chasselas is considered the emblematic grape variety and produces dry white wines with pleasant minerality. Wine cellars in the Lavaux area offer tastings and direct sales.
Paths through Lavaux
The Route des Grands Crus presents 24 selected Lavaux wines at eight stations. Panels along the route provide information about the history of Lavaux; QR codes offer additional content and wine selections. The Route des Grands Crus de Lavaux can be started in Chexbres.
Lavaux Vinorama is a centre for discovering the region's wines and the terraced vineyards of Lavaux. Around 300 regional wines are offered there. Lavaux can also be explored on the Lavaux Panoramic tourist train, while the fleet of the Compagnie Générale de Navigation offers an opportunity to visit Lavaux from the water.
Restaurants in Chexbres serve whitefish fillets and other specialities on panoramic terraces, accompanied by local wine.
History and Culture
Today's terraced vineyards of Lavaux can be traced back to the 11th century, when Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries controlled the area. The Forge in Chexbres is designated as a cultural and educational venue.
The Le Rocher house is located near Chexbres in the municipality of Saint-Saphorin, Switzerland.
