Culture
The village church of Salvan is dedicated to Saint Maurice, Saint-Maurice. The village also has a museum. In the centre of Salvan, the Fondation Marconi and its radio museum showcase Guglielmo Marconi's experiments in telecommunications. Salvan is also associated with his early wireless transmissions from 1895.
The Tour des hameaux is a hiking route for all ability levels that focuses on Salvan's architectural heritage. Along the way, it passes traditional buildings such as barns, granaries, bakehouses, mills and homes; there are also opportunities to eat or have a picnic. In the wider Salvan area, you can see a historic railway station, a communal bakehouse and a chapel in Le Trétien.
Nature
A cable car leads to La Creusaz. La Creusaz offers panoramic views of Mont Blanc and is the starting point for numerous high-alpine excursions. The adventure trail at La Creusaz provides information about natural hazards and how to deal with them; another section introduces visitors to the region's fauna and flora.
The hiking trail through the Dailley Gorge connects Les Granges with Van d'en Bas and leads over footbridges and stairs. The route offers views of Salanfe and the Alps.
Lac de Salanfe lies at an altitude of 1,925 metres in a glacially formed basin surrounded by the Dents-du-Midi, the Tour Salière and Luisin. A family trail circles the lake in less than two hours. An educational trail at Lac de Salanfe introduces visitors to alpine fauna, flora and geology. From Vallon de Van above Salvan-Les Marécottes, Salanfe can be reached on foot in one hour and 30 minutes.
Les Marécottes is home to an alpine animal park. Zoo des Marécottes displays alpine wildlife in a natural setting and is located about a five-minute walk from the railway station.
Getting there
Salvan and the surrounding villages can be reached by the Mont-Blanc Express. To reach the Sentier de Salanfe, take the train to Martigny first, then continue on the Mont-Blanc Express to Les Marécottes, followed by a shuttle to Van d'en Haut.
