Nature
The core area of the Rigoles de Vionnaz is listed in the Federal Inventory of Wetlands of National Importance. The Rigoles de Vionnaz have been protected at cantonal level since 1991. In the Rhône Plain, they preserve a refuge for the rare marsh geranium. Kingfishers use the Rigoles de Vionnaz as a transit and wintering area. The present-day marshland of the Rigoles is a remnant of the 700 hectares of peat bogs that once covered the lower Valais plain.
From the Tour de Don, views extend across mountain forests and alpine meadows.
Culture
A large wall was built to protect the village from flooding.
Trails
Vionnaz has 45.5 km of hiking trails and 11 km of officially recognised mountain trails. The nearby Sentier des alpages de Vionnaz trail is accessible from Torgon; the easy hike is 13.49 km long and takes approximately 4.5 hours. As a circular route through alpine pastures, it combines changing landscapes with diverse fauna and flora. Along the way, views may open up of Lake Geneva, the Valais and Vaud Alps, the Dents du Midi and Mont Blanc. The trail can be reached by train to Aigle and then by bus 142 onwards to Torgon and La Jorette.
Local character
Alpage Eusin specialises in producing goat cheese. At Alpage Chétillon, there is a mountain inn where visitors can sample regional specialities.
