Geographical setting
Ayent stretches along the sunny side of the Rhône Valley from La Maya at 500 metres to the summit of the Wildhorn at 3,247 metres. The villages lie among vineyards, hills, forests, meadows, pastures and marshes. Above the villages lies Anzère, Ayent’s tourist resort in the mountain zone at around 1,500 to 1,600 metres.
Culture and history
The Musée valaisan des Bisses in Botyre is housed in a historic 17th-century building and has 270 square metres of exhibition space. It presents the history of traditional irrigation channels from Roman times to the present day. Interactive indoor and outdoor exhibitions introduce children to irrigation techniques that are still used today.
The Grand Bisse d'Ayent was created in 1442 and irrigates the meadows and vineyards of Ayent and Grimisuat. Along the Chemin du Musée, information panels explain the water supply via the Bisse d'Ayent, the Bisse de Sion and Bitailla. The Church of St-Romain in Ayent dates back at the latest to the early 11th century.
Nature and trails
The easy Tour du Lac de Tseuzier is 4.9 kilometres long and takes about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. In the Rawyl area, Lac de Tseuzier lies at 1,774 metres; it is the starting point for both family-friendly and more challenging hikes.
The Rawyl, Andins and Audannes climbing areas offer more than 300 routes across all difficulty levels. The left bank of the Tseuzier dam is accessible with a pushchair. A shuttle connects Anzère, Ayent and the Tseuzier dam.
