Nature and landscape

The Murgbach (Lake Walen) is a southern tributary of Lake Walen. It is located in Murg and flows through the St. Gallen Murg Valley as well as the three Murg lakes. The local municipality of Murg owns land, forests and alpine areas that extend as far as the Murg lakes nature reserve.

The Ritschakopf, Heustock, Höchst – eastern summit and Plättlispitz are located in the area surrounding Murg.

History and culture

Murg's history dates back to 1045: that year, the village was first recorded as Murga. Its religious heritage includes the St. Bartholomew Chapel, consecrated in 1493, as well as a village church built in 1760 that was replaced by a parish centre in 1975.

The former Murg spinning mill is part of the area's industrial history. It was built in 1834/35 and is described as the oldest cotton spinning mill in the Sarganserland region. Production ended in 1996. Former local industrial enterprises also included an iron forge recorded in 1450 and a smelting furnace belonging to the Gonzen mine, which operated on the Murgbach from 1632 to 1654.
