Bennau is a village in the canton of Schwyz and belongs both to the district and the municipality of Einsiedeln. The village is located on the northern edge of the Rothenthurm raised bog and at the confluence of the Alp and Biber rivers.

In the wider Einsiedeln region, an easy hike from Einsiedeln to Biberbrugg leads through the Schwantenau nature reserve and takes about three hours. Schwantenau is considered the fourth-largest raised bog in Switzerland and is a habitat for rare animals and plants.

Culture and history

Today's Church of St. Sebastian was inaugurated in 1895 in the Neo-Gothic style. The name Bennau goes back to Blessed Benno, a blinded bishop of Metz who came to this area around 900. For centuries, a pilgrimage route ran through Bennau and was used by people from Alsace, Baden and Swabia.

After the plague epidemic at the beginning of the 17th century, the first chapel on Bennau soil was built in 1611. The cultural life includes regular theater performances as well as the Bennau field music band.
