Landscape

The Canton of Lucerne encompasses urban cultural areas, lake landscapes, pre-Alpine mountains and regions shaped by agriculture, all in close proximity to one another. The landscape stretches from lowland areas around Inwil to mountainous terrain reaching approximately 2,350 metres in the municipality of Flühli.

The canton includes numerous lakes and rivers, hills and mountains, as well as towns and villages offering a wide variety of hiking landscapes. The UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch, with its moorland landscapes, biodiversity and sustainable development, is connected to the canton’s wider landscape.

Hiking and Cycling

Walking and hiking are among the established activities for visitors throughout the Canton of Lucerne. The landscapes range from the northern hilly areas and the Reuss plains to the mountainous regions of Pilatus, Rigi and Entlebuch.

Mountain biking, e-biking and gravel biking are represented by a multi-day biosphere bike tour in the UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch.

Culture

The cultural traditions of the Canton of Lucerne include Lucerne Carnival and major international cultural events such as the Lucerne Festival.

The medieval covered Chapel Bridge over the Reuss and its associated Water Tower are located in the city of Lucerne, within the canton. Together, they form a prominent cultural heritage landmark in the canton.
