Masein is a municipality in the Viamala region of the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland. The village is situated on a sunny slope on the Heinzenberg above Thusis and offers views across the valley. The surrounding landscape includes forests, fields and small streams; at the same time, Masein has a village character and a rural setting.

History and Culture

The Church of St Florinus was first mentioned in 1441, and the Reformation took place in Masein in 1525. Masein's documented medieval origins include a first mention in 1156 under “de Medezenu”; there are also historical connections to Cazis Abbey and local castles.

Rietberg Castle is located near Masein. Paspels Castle is situated in the surrounding area, while Falkenstein Castle ruins lie in the wider regional area.
