Schattenhalb: Hotels and accommodations

The Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge follows a secured 1.2-kilometre route through tunnels, over more than 200 steps and through mountain forest. The walk takes around 45 minutes. Around Schattenhalb, visitors will find deep gorges, river gorges and the foothills of the Alpine peaks.

Nature

The gorge is suitable for families who enjoy exploring unspoilt nature. There is a picnic area at the exit, while the Broch barbecue area is located near the entrance. Dogs are allowed to enter the Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge; in the Schwarzhorn federal hunting ban area, they must be kept on a leash.

A hike in the Reichenbach Valley leads past waterfalls and offers views of mountain peaks. One section of the Rosenlaui hike is steep and secured with ropes; it is recommended only for experienced hikers. The running routes around Schattenhalb range from easily accessible paths along the river to more challenging trails with elevation differences.

Routes

The Willigen cultural tour begins at the Reichenbach funicular. The short Willigen–Reichenbach Waterfall–Geissholz–Lammi–Aare Gorge circular tour takes around 2.5 to 3 hours.

The old Scheideggweg was an important trade route between Grindelwald and Meiringen. Later, it gained tourist significance through the Rosenlaui thermal spa and the Oberland circular tour via the Kleine Scheidegg and Grosse Scheidegg.

Culture and history

A runic symbol dated 1600 is carved into the granite wall at Tannenhubel. The Willigen circular tour takes in traditional buildings that are more than 400 years old. With their solid ground floors and two wooden upper floors, the traditional houses along the Willigen route are considered a typical architectural form of the Bernese Oberland.

The Rosenlaui health spa was discovered in 1771. Spa tourism developed there until a landslide destroyed the health spa shortly before the First World War.

Getting there

The Reichenbach funicular is 714 metres long and was inaugurated on 8 June 1899. The Rosenlaui route can be reached by train to Meiringen and then by PostBus to Hotel Rosenlaui. For the return journey, the PostBus runs from Kaltenbrunnen-Säge to Meiringen.
