Culture

The rural roadside village has remained remarkably intact. The open village stream follows the winding course of the village street and forms a defining feature of the historic town centre. At the same time, it lends character to the streetscape; this is what gives the old part of the village its particular spatial quality.

The farmsteads on both sides of the village street accompanying the stream, together with their outbuildings, each form independent units. The Krone inn is a 1870 building in the Swiss timber style with ornamental detailing. Lyssach possesses considerable architectural and historical value, based on the large number of valuable, well-preserved farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Nature

The surroundings of the historic settlement comprise an open plain with meadows and arable fields; alongside the older buildings, there are gardens and orchard-like areas. Chestnut and lime trees are defining elements of the historic streetscape. Lyssach is also home to a broad-crowned lime tree under protection.

Between Burgdorf and Lyssach, Meiemoos is listed in the national inventory of raised and transitional bogs. The Meienmoos nature reserve contains a raised bog that provides a habitat for typical bog flora and fauna.

Geographical setting

The Bern–Burgdorf railway line through Lyssach opened in 1857. The southern station district is clearly separated from the old village centre; there is an underpass beneath the railway line.
