Trogen is a municipality in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden in Switzerland and is situated at an altitude of 903 metres. The town was first mentioned in 1168; its name refers to a number of fountains, which is also reflected in the town’s coat of arms.

History and Administration
In 1597, Trogen became the administrative centre of Appenzell Ausserrhoden when Appenzell was divided into the half-cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden and Appenzell Ausserrhoden. Trogen is also the seat of the cantonal judicial authorities.
