Lidingö combines a local winter sports option with natural and cultural destinations. This makes it possible to combine a winter stay with a single ski slope, tobogganing, running and hiking options, as well as museums and historic sites. This local description says nothing about a larger ski area, a specific elevation or snow reliability.

  • Local winter sports include a ski slope and a nature toboggan run.
  • A 30-kilometre running route leads across meadows, gravel paths and uphill trails.
  • A nine-kilometre hiking trail crosses a nature reserve to the coast.
  • Woodland, botanical features and coastal paths characterise another protected area.
  • A rail connection and a commuter boat are available for getting there.

Local ski slope and other sports options

Ekholmsnäsbacken is Lidingö’s local ski slope. This name does not indicate the size of a ski area, the presence of multiple lifts, the elevation, artificial snowmaking or snow reliability. When comparing ski hotels and accommodation for a ski holiday, you should therefore not assume a specific proximity to the slope or lift access.

For groups with different interests, the TCS Lidingöloppet is another option. The 30-kilometre route alternates between flat meadows, gravel paths, uphill trails and steep climbs. The classic route is open around the clock for training. The final 10-kilometre section is illuminated daily until 10:00 p.m.

Nature between the coast and nature reserves

Elfviksleden runs for nine kilometres from Lidingö Centrum to Elfviks udde and through the Långängen–Elfvik Nature Reserve. The trail therefore extends from a central starting point to the water. Elfviks gård, with a working farm and a park by the sea, is also located in the same protected area.

In Kappsta Nature Reserve, a deciduous woodland clearing with botanical features meets a rocky coast on Lilla Värtan. There are kilometres of hiking trails along Lidingö’s coast, and swimming is possible at several points. Naturstigen leads through a species-rich, lushly vegetated grove landscape and was opened in 2007.

Cultural destinations for days away from the slopes

Millesgården is a museum with a sculpture park. Carl and Olga Milles created the site both as a residence and as an artist’s studio. Lidingö kyrka is the oldest surviving building on Lidingö; the present church was built in 1623 at the presumed site of a small medieval wooden chapel dedicated to Saint Anne, Sankta Anna.

The Lidingö Museum presents a permanent exhibition on the development of Lidingö from 8000 BC to the present day. The cultural offering thus ranges from art and architecture to the island’s long history, providing an independent counterpart to winter sports.

Getting there and assessing accommodation

There are two public transport connections for getting there: a rail connection and a commuter boat connection. You should check the location of accommodation in relation to the ski slope, hiking trails or stops separately in each case; the general transport connections do not imply any specific proximity of accommodation.
