Hiking and Cycling

Several clearly described trails with different lengths and landscapes are available away from winter sports as well. Mullsjö Runt is a 22-kilometre, easy-to-walk hiking route starting at the MSOK cabin. It leads through open pine heathland, past sparkling lakes and waterways, over terrain that is partly flat and partly hilly. The Knipesjöleden also begins at the MSOK cabin and is 9 kilometres long. The hiking route runs through a lakeside landscape with plenty of spruce forest and elements of a cultural landscape, along forest paths and simple trails through flat and hilly terrain.

The Stråkenleden is a 10-kilometre hike taking about three hours, marked in violet. Its good forest paths lead through an easily accessible, partly hilly moraine landscape. The Södra Vätterleden is also part of the Smålandsleden trail system. A 33-kilometre cycle route passes through the two communities of Mullsjö and Sandhem and runs alongside forests, meadows and lakes.

Nature

Spruce and pine trees grow in the Ryfors Gammelskog Nature Reserve. Many trees are 150 to 200 years old, and some pines are even more than 300 years old. The reserve has several marked trails, a car park, picnic areas, information boards and an accessible toilet. The blue trail is more accessible, but is not fully wheelchair accessible because of a cattle grid and some steeper inclines.

Nyckelås is an unusually large deciduous woodland area for the region, with many rare species, springs and calcareous rocks. Trails lead down through the reserve to Nässjön and the Tidan. There are two car parks and an approximately 4-kilometre marked trail through partly hilly terrain and narrow forest paths.

Water

Stråken is an approximately 23-kilometre-long, relatively narrow and sheltered canoeing waterway close to nature and wildlife. Glacial sand ridges, pine forest and several picnic areas and wind shelters characterise its course. At Mullsjö Camping, there are parking spaces next to the bathing area. Canoes have to be carried for a short distance; a canoe trolley is recommended.

In Mullsjön, you can fish for perch, pike, roach and tench. Fishing permits can be purchased and boats rented through Landhs Konditori.

Culture and History

Ryfors is an old ironworks dating from 1742, with an active forge, a concert hall in the old millrace building and a bowling alley that can now be used. The Eriksgatuleden follows sections of medieval riding paths. It is a 7-kilometre hiking route within Sweden’s largest continuous system of sunken roads, which is part of the old Eriksgatuleden. The Gyljeryd Cultural Trail is a 5-kilometre cultural hike on Gyljerydsmon. It passes several important sites from the early history of the locality and impressive traces of the Ice Age.

The Tavelhult Local Heritage Museum has around 10,000 numbered and registered objects. It is an open museum where visitors are allowed to touch the objects.

The Museet svenska trägubbar in Mullsjö houses the world’s largest collection of Swedish-carved wooden figures, with around 1,300 objects by approximately 250 carvers and artists; today, it is the largest collection of its kind in Sweden.
