Accommodation in Berg: Nature and Culture at Hoverberget

Berg combines protected nature, historic sites and trails around Hoverberget with destinations along Lake Storsjön. Hoverberget is protected both as a nature reserve and as a Natura 2000 site. On its western side lies Rämnan, a 500-metre-long gorge with rock walls up to 25 metres high. Near the cave, the western area of Hoverberget forms a species-rich, south-facing vegetation area.

Nature

Hoverbergsgrottan is a 170-metre-long rock fissure cave, described as the largest of its kind in Scandinavia. Its first half is accessible thanks to lighting and sturdy stairs. Hoverberget also has trails, viewpoints, car parks, a rest cabin and an information hut at the summit. This means that very different landscape elements exist side by side within the same natural area: the rock fissure cave, the gorge, the protected vegetation and the trails on the mountain.

Trails

Kyrkstigen begins at the marina, passes Berg Church and continues towards Hoverberget. The trail is approximately 6 kilometres long and leads into the Hoverberget Nature Reserve. Another route is Hoverbergsleden: an approximately 9-kilometre-long, orange-marked trail around the foot of Hoverberget. It passes Hoverbergsgrottan, the local heritage farm, an execution site and a soldiers' latrine.

Culture

Berg Church was built in 1793–1795 by master builder Johan Christian Loëll. It replaced a medieval predecessor that stood immediately south of the present church building. Berg Church is also considered one of the largest churches in Jämtland. Pärlstigen runs along the bay at the southern end of Lake Storsjön by Berg Church. It comprises 15 wrought-iron installations designed according to Martin Lönnebo's rosary Frälsarkransen. QR code signs are placed along Pärlstigen, adding an extra interpretive dimension to the walk.

At the foot of Hoverberget lies Bergs Hembygdsgård, also known as Bergheim. The farm now comprises around 20 old buildings. Bingstasmedjan is a complete gun workshop and is considered a major attraction at the farm. According to a local legend, the giant Hoverbergsgubben occupied Hoverbergsgrottan when Jämtland was to be Christianised. In summer, Bergs Hembygdsgård is a meeting place for people who live in or spend time in Berg parish. A children's question trail ran around Trollstigen at Bergs Hembygdsgård.

Water

Lake Storsjön and the waters around Hoverberg complement the trails and cultural destinations with various activities. At Kanuzentrum Hoverberg Storsjön, a tandem fishing kayak for two people can be rented for eight hours. In Hoverberg, fishing with an experienced fishing guide is possible for both beginners and experienced anglers. A rowing boat can be rented by the hour on the shore of Lake Storsjön.

The marina in Hoverberg has a mini-golf course with 12 new holes. The area also includes a sandy beach and a grassy beach, as well as a changing room and a barbecue area. The different shoreline areas, the boat options and the fishing opportunities are therefore among the specifically named destinations by the water, while the marina is also located along Kyrkstigen.

Local

Kossan i Berg runs a café that offers, among other things, homemade ice cream. Kossan i Berg also has a milk vending machine that is open around the clock. For digital orientation, Naturkartan is a mobile- and web-friendly service through which hiking trails, nature reserves, bathing spots and other excursion destinations can be found.

In the vicinity of Berg, Svenstavik has a station on the Inlandsbanan railway. Other destinations for your planning include Klövsjö, Älvdalen, Åre Municipality and Härjedalen.
