Borlänge between Romme Alpin, nature and culture

Romme Alpin is located 13 kilometres outside Borlänge and has 34 ski runs and 14 lifts. The resort offers skiing in all four cardinal directions as well as a large beginner area.

Other places in the regional overview include Idkerberget, Malung-Sälen and Älvdalen.

Winter and nature

Gyllbergen is a high-altitude, roadless wilderness area with cabins, wind shelters, and marked summer and winter trails. There are many kilometres of summer and winter trails, allowing for extensive hikes and ski tours away from roads and traffic noise. Dragbergsgata in Gyllbergen is a fissure northeast of Dragberget.

There are a total of 22 nature reserves in Borlänge Municipality, nine of which are municipally managed and owned by the municipality. These nine municipal nature reserves serve as destinations for excursions and everyday exercise.

Trails through the landscapes

Holmsjöarna encompasses reed beds, marshland, waterside meadows, pastureland, fields, lakes, waterways, and deciduous and coniferous forests, and offers a rich birdlife. Birdwatching towers and boardwalks are available for visitors. A marked hiking trail of approximately 3 kilometres runs through the nature reserve between two car parks; side trails lead to birdwatching towers and a picnic area. The hiking trail, birdwatching towers, and picnic area are accessible year-round.

Frostbrunnsdalen is a steep, deep ravine with lush vegetation and a rich variety of plant and animal life. Several trails and picnic areas provide access to the area; there is also a café that is open in summer.

The Runn Runt cycling route runs through the scenic surroundings of Lake Runn between Falun and Borlänge. It is mostly on asphalt and partly on gravel roads. Bysjörundan is a cycling trail just over 10 kilometres long in northern Borlänge, running through Kvarnsveden and Sör Amsberg, and it can also be walked. The route is marked with red posts bearing white crosses and has 17 information boards and four picnic areas. The Bjusanleden mountain biking trail starts in Plättbacken and leads to Bjusan.

Culture and history

Ornässtugan is a wooden building from the early 16th century at its original location on Lake Runn between Borlänge and Falun. The Ornässtugan Museum opened in 1758 and is considered Sweden’s second-oldest museum. The associated café prepares its baked goods on site and also offers options for people who avoid gluten, milk, or eggs.

Gammelgården is an open-air museum with 35 buildings and thousands of objects representing Borlänge’s historical roots. Midsummer celebrations, Christmas markets, dance evenings, and outdoor church services are held at Gammelgården. There is also a café open in summer that serves lunch.

Torsång Church is considered the oldest church in Dalarna and has largely retained its original appearance. It is located at a historic meeting place on the headland between the outlets of Runn and Ösjön into the Dalälven. At that time, the waterways were important transport routes.

Other places to visit

At the 2047 Science Center, visitors can explore natural sciences and technology in a fun, hands-on way, including at a climbing wall, in a steel exhibition, on a car racing track, and in a planetarium.

Äventyrsgruvan in Tuna Hästberg is located in a former mine that closed in 1968 and offers an underground visitor experience. No prior experience is required, but a normal level of fitness is necessary; the ascent and descent are compared to walking up and down a 25-storey building.
