Gyeonggi-do: Culture, History and Ceramics

Gyeonggi-do offers a range of starting points for a trip focused on history, folk culture, ceramics and landscapes. If you are looking for somewhere to stay, you can first decide which of these interests will shape your itinerary: fortresses and historic sites, traditional crafts or nature destinations.

Fortresses and History

Hwaseong Fortress surrounds the center of the city of Suwon. This fortress, built from stacked stones and bricks, dates back to the Joseon Dynasty. Its walls are 5.74 km long and enclose an area of 130 ha. Four main gates have been preserved. Its many defensive structures include sluice gates, observation towers, command posts, signal towers, corner towers and bastions. If you are interested in its construction and defensive layout, there is more to explore here than a single wall: the different structures offer distinct insights into the design of the fortress.

Namhansanseong Fortress also offers an insight into the region's history. Its temporary palace served as a refuge for the royal family and as a temporary capital during the war. For a walk along the walls, the Namhansanseong Trail offers five routes. Their paths run closely alongside the fortress walls. You can therefore choose between focusing on history at the palace and following a route that traces the fortifications.

Another historic site is Yeongneung, the joint tomb of King Sejong, the fourth ruler of the Joseon Dynasty, and Queen Soheon. At Imjingak Resort, the Freedom Bridge from the Korean War has been preserved. These sites offer different points of interest: Yeongneung connects the history of the Joseon rulers with a royal tomb, while the preserved bridge commemorates the Korean War.

Folk Culture and Ceramic Art

At the Korean Folk Village, traditional culture from the late Joseon period is presented through restored houses, cultural classes and other interactive activities. Seasonal performances there include folk music, equestrian martial arts and traditional wedding ceremonies. The site also includes a family-friendly amusement park with 15 attractions. You can tailor your visit to your interests: explore historic houses and cultural activities, or focus on the amusement park's attractions.

The Icheon Ceramics Village is currently home to about 80 pottery studios and around 300 working kilns. Visitors can watch ceramics being made and buy them directly. For travelers who would rather get hands-on, some workshops at Icheon Ye's Park offer pottery classes where you can make your own work. These are two different ways to explore the subject: watching and buying finished ceramics in the village, or working with clay yourself in individual studios. Landscapes and Distinctive Places

Dumulmeori is where the Bukhangang and Namhangang rivers meet. There is a landing for a historic ferry, along with three zelkovas about 400 years old that look like a single large tree. The place brings together the meeting of two rivers and striking old trees. Dense groups of trees shape the landscape at Jungmisan Recreational Forest, which offers views over the Namhangang. Planning Visits Around Your Interests

You cannot travel to the Dora Observatory independently. Access is only possible through the DMZ Peace Tour, which starts at Imjingak Pavilion after booking.
