Litija’s history is particularly evident in its wooden bridge: it was the first bridge in Zasavje, was built in 1855, connected Litija and Gradec, and became both a landmark of the city and an urban promenade.

Culture and History

The Litija City Museum is dedicated to the history and urban life of Litija. Its topics include rafting and shipping on the Sava, the railway and the Sitarjevec Mine. The parish church of St. Nicholas stands in the old town. It was expanded into a cruciform church in several construction phases. The church in Litija is open daily from morning until evening for personal prayer.

The Farbar Turn, also known as Litijski Turn, is the oldest building in Litija. Historians date its construction to the 14th century. On the outskirts of Klenik, there is also an enlarged replica of the Vačer Situla. It can be reached on foot via the Avenue of Creativity, across prehistoric ground.

Nature and Culinary Delights

Limonite stalactites can be seen in the main tunnel of the Sitarjevec Mine. The mine is considered the only known place in Central Europe with growing limonite stalactites. More than 60 different mineral species have been found there, some of which can be seen in the tourist section. A tour of the main tunnel leads through an authentic mining environment and lasts up to two hours. The mine also offers the traditional miners’ meal “Sitarjevška mal'ca”.

Trails and Activities

The Levstik Trail connects Litija and Čatež. It begins on Levstikova ulica in the old town of Litija and is marked with more than 80 information boards. The Badjura Trail runs through the surrounding hills, encircling the Litija and Šmartno valley. It is one of the circular mountain hiking trails registered by the Slovenian Mountaineering Association.

The GEOSS Adventure Park has seven different treetop climbing courses and a 915-metre-long zip line. In Oglarska dežela near Dole pri Litiji, visitors can learn about the long-standing tradition of making charcoal mounds and producing charcoal. They can also actively participate in this work with wood and fire.

You can return from Laze to Litija by train.

When comparing offers in Litija, first check the exact location and type of accommodation on the respective page. For planning a trip with several travellers, occupancy, price components and included services are also important. Also pay attention to the applicable booking, modification and cancellation conditions. Compare the stated maximum occupancy with the actual number of people required, and read which services are included in the listed price. The rules for modifications and cancellations may also be worded differently depending on the offer. This keeps the key conditions of each offer clearly separate before you make a decision.
