Celje Castle is the largest medieval castle in Slovenia and one of the city's best-known landmarks. Visitors can explore Friderik Tower, exhibitions and the remains of the castle halls, as well as take part in guided tours. In the Princely Palace, the exhibition “Celeia - a town beneath today's town” presents the largest display to date of the remains of Roman Celeia preserved on site. The permanent exhibition “The Counts of Celje” is also located there.

Culture

The historic city centre of Celje contains the remains of an old Roman road. The historic city centre also includes medieval towers and a significant architectural heritage. Marijino znamenje was Celje's first public monument and was erected in 1776. Another cultural site is the Alma Karlin Memorial House in Pečovnik: it was renovated and opened as a publicly accessible memorial house in 2014. It houses the exhibition “Alma M. Karlin's Lonely Journey”; the house also hosts numerous cultural events, including the Summer in Celje festival.

History

Stari Pisker is a memorial site and an external unit of the Museum of Recent History Celje. The museum section focuses on 35 original farewell letters from hostages from the Celje area. Advance registration is required to visit Stari Pisker, as the memorial rooms are located in a prison that is still in operation. The permanent exhibition “Living in Celje” tells the story of the city and its inhabitants in the 20th century. It includes a reconstructed city street with craft businesses and workshops where master craftsmen occasionally give demonstrations.

Museums

The Celje Regional Museum presents archaeological, historical and art-historical collections from prehistory to the First World War. The original Photo House Pelikan from 1899 is designated as a cultural monument and is located on Razlagova Street as an external unit of the Celje Museum of Recent History. The upper floor contains a skylight studio where photographs can still be taken; it is one of the few studios of its kind in Europe. The Centre for Contemporary Arts manages the Celje Gallery of Contemporary Art and accepts registrations for guided tours of current exhibitions.

Nature and Trails

The Celje City Forest comprises seven experience-oriented recreational trails and an educational and experiential trail. The Celje City Forest Treehouse is open to individuals and groups. The Treehouse frequently hosts workshops, concerts and poetry readings. Celjska Koča is a hill and recreational area accessible on foot, by bicycle or by car. Around Celjska Koča there are well-maintained hiking and cycling trails, an adventure park and a summer toboggan run.

Leisure

Celjska Koča also offers a zip line considered one of the longest in Slovenia. The “Celje trails” downhill mountain-biking tracks are located below Osenica Hill. At Tropic House, visitors can explore the world's ecosystems and a Mesozoic ecosystem with moving models of prehistoric reptiles. Herman's Den is a children's museum and a space for children's creative activities. Tehnopark Celje is the first and largest park for science, technology and innovation, offering opportunities to play, learn, socialise and explore.
