Omšenie – Nature, Trails and Culture

Omšenie is a mountain municipality in the southwest of the Strážovské vrchy mountains. Above the village lies the Omšenská Baba Nature Reserve: a distinctive carbonate rock formation on the foothills of the Strážovské vrchy. The area is home to rock, forest and wetland communities. The Teplička stream also flows through Omšenie.

Nature

The rock biotopes of Omšenská Baba are home to rare plant species. These include Pulsatilla subsalavica, Dianthus praecox subsp. praecox and Primula auricula. Another protected natural area lies in the Havránková dolina valley: the stream there has been protected as a natural monument since the 1990s, and the protected area covers just under 5 hectares.

The mountains of Baske and Slimáčkova are located in the immediate vicinity of Omšenie. The Truborka and Vápec mountains lie in the surrounding area. The landscape therefore extends from the rock biotopes above the municipality into the surrounding mountain region.

Trails and Activities

A blue-marked route to Baske begins directly in Omšenie; the ascent takes 2.5 to 3 hours. A tourist hut is located below the summit. Baske also hosts a winter hiking gathering every year.

The excursion to Omšenská Baba begins at the small car park by the cemetery in Omšenie and takes approximately 2.5 hours in total, including rest breaks.

The Forest Educational Trail begins at the bridge by the Kamenický stream reservoir in the Baračka district. Fishing is possible at the Omšenská Reservoir, including for catfish, tench, carp and pike.

The Žihľavník Riding Club in Omšenie offers carriage and sleigh rides, riding lessons in the indoor arena, western riding and guided horse leading.

Culture and History

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Omšenie is Romanesque, dates from the first half of the 13th century and has a Romanesque tower. It has a rectangular ground plan with a polygonal termination and is listed under ÚZPF number 1291/1. Outside Omšenie, in the direction of Trenčianske Teplice, stands the Baroque Chapel of the Virgin Mary, dating from 1794. Inside is a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary.

At the end of the Kamenická Valley in Omšenie stands a monument to American airmen. It commemorates the shooting down of an American bomber in 1944, in which Roland W. Morin lost his life. In the wider region around Omšenie are the Church of Saint Helena and the Church of Saint Vendelin.

The Slovak writer and cultural representative Daniel Krman was born in Omšenie on 28 August 1663. A commemorative plaque in the village remembers him.

Traditions

The Omšenský kroj is associated with the mountain-farming and pastoral character of the area and continues to be maintained in Omšenie as a local tradition. The Omšenské hodové slávnosti are a local celebration featuring music, entertainment and social gatherings.

The Žihľavník Riding Club hosts the Western Day event once a year.
