Accommodation in Selce: Culture and Landscape

In Selce, the Jánska vatra bonfire is traditionally lit at Stráň. The tradition is therefore tied to Stráň as the stated location. Hrádok: This protected cultural monument is registered in the Central Register of Cultural Monuments of the Slovak Republic under registration number Ss/2192.

Culture and History

The Hrádok archaeological site is associated with finds of Roman coins and jewellery. Remains of a medieval church have also been preserved in Selce itself. The village’s vernacular architecture included stone, masonry-built three-room houses with thatched roofs in the 19th century. Large two-storey granaries with arcades were derived from anti-Ottoman watchtowers. At the end of the 19th century, women in Selce produced so-called Hont lace.

Nature and Landscape

The cadastral territory of the municipality of Selce belongs to the Slovenské stredohorie geomorphological unit and, in part, to the Krupinská planina subregion, in whose western part it lies. Most of the cadastral territory consists of a moderately dissected inversion hilly landscape. In the Krupinica Valley, the cadastral territory of Selce contains floodplain foxtail meadows and wet meadows.

The southern part of Selce’s cadastral territory extends into the Litava Site of European Importance (SKUEV0036). It covers an area of 2,629.70 hectares. As a result, different landscape forms stand side by side in the municipal area: the hilly landscape, the Krupinica Valley with its meadows, and the southern area reached by Litava.

Trails and Events

The Keltské chodníčky educational trail leads from the Čachovo recreation centre to the Hrádok archaeological site. The trail is approximately 5.6 km long and has eight information boards. A recurring event in Čachovo in Selce is also the Horský beh Memoriál Jána Kupca, a mountain race. The 11th edition was announced for Sunday, 20 September 2026, from 9:30 a.m.

Remembrance and Religious Heritage

The Kaplnka Lurdskej Panny Márie is located in Závoz. It was expanded in the 1950s after larger statues of the Virgin Mary and Saint Bernadette had been acquired. A gathering has been held at the chapel every September since the end of the Second World War.

Závoz is also home to three stone cellars that are recognised as war graves. During the Second World War, these three cellars served as shelters for local families.

Culinary Tradition

Kutliarsky deň is a recurring traditional culinary event featuring a competition to cook Kutlové, a tripe goulash. The event complements the historical and landscape connections with an explicitly culinary tradition from Selce.

Selce has neither railway tracks nor a railway station. The nearest connection to passenger rail services is in Zvolen. For travel by train, a distinction must therefore be made between the village without its own railway infrastructure and the nearest passenger rail connection.
