Valea Adâncă: Churches, Archaeology and Landscape

Valea Adâncă brings together sacred heritage, archaeological traces and distinctive landscape features. To understand the area, it is therefore important to consider not only individual sights, but also different periods and types of sites alongside one another.

Culture and History

The Biserica Sfântul Nicolae in Valea Adâncă was begun in 1715 and completed in 1716. This places the church clearly in the early 18th century. Its patronal feast is celebrated on 6 December. In addition, the Biserica Sfântul Nicolae was historically documented by Nicolae Iorga in “Studii” in 1776. The completion of construction, feast day and historical documentation thus represent three different details concerning the same church.

The church of the new cemetery in Valea Adâncă is part of the more recent sacred history. It was consecrated on 2 August 2020 and built between 2019 and 2020. Its patronal dedications are “Nașterea Sfântului Ioan Botezătorul” and “Sfântul Daniil Sihastrul”. The consecration in 2020, the construction period and the two patronal dedications each form a separate part of its classification.

Archaeology

Archaeology is also connected with Valea Adâncă. The archaeological site of Valea Adâncă is one of the four archaeological sites of local historical interest in the commune of Miroslava. Another trace lies on Dealul Nucului near Valea Adâncă: flint axes from the Late Neolithic were discovered there.

The two details differ in their geographical reference. The archaeological site is considered in connection with the commune of Miroslava, while the findspot of the flint axes is specifically associated with Dealul Nucului near Valea Adâncă. For historical classification, it is therefore useful to consider the commune level and the named findspot separately.

Nature and Landscape

The Pădurea Uricani Nature Reserve is regarded as a tourist landmark of the commune of Miroslava. In the area around Valea Adâncă there is also Dealul Păun, which is classified as a mountain. Dealul Surda, Dealul Bârca and La Floreanca are hills in the area around Valea Adâncă.

This creates a clearly distinguishable landscape consisting of one mountain and three named hills. Pădurea Uricani, by contrast, represents the nature reserve at commune level. The different designations help to read the landscape information about Valea Adâncă precisely according to site type and geographical reference.

Surroundings

Several cultural sites in Iași are located in the vicinity of Valea Adâncă. The Palatul Culturii Iași is a palace, while Casa Dosoftei - Muzeul Literaturii Române Iași is a museum. The Statuia lui Gheorghe Asachi and the Monumentul „Academia Mihaileana“ Iasi are monuments. Thus, the surroundings include a palace, a museum and two monuments.
