Nucet: Ski slopes in Vârtop, mountain hiking trails and nature

The Satul de Vacanță Vârtop in Nucet was designated a resort of local tourist interest under Government Decision No. 120/2024, published in Official Gazette No. 144 of 22 February 2024. The Satul de Vacanță Vârtop has ski slopes for winter sports.

Winter and trails

The Nucet area at the foot of the Munții Bihor offers numerous mountain hiking trails. They range from easy forest walks to difficult climbs to the highest peaks of the Apuseni Mountains.

There are five officially approved tourist hiking trails in the Satul de Vacanță Vârtop. Vârtop is also home to the Pietrele Negre via ferrata, rated difficulty level B.

The difficult Şaua Vârtop–Vârful Cucurbăta Mare hiking trail is 14 kilometres long as a circular route, takes six to seven hours, reaches an elevation of 1,849 metres and is marked with a red bar. The moderately difficult Băița–Şaua Vârtop hiking trail is 11 kilometres long, takes four to five hours and is marked with a blue triangle. The easy trail to Groapa Ruginoasă is five kilometres long, takes two to three hours and is marked with a yellow cross.

When comparing the routes for a one-day trip, you can first consider the difficulty level, followed by walking time and distance. The marking is an additional orientation feature for each route. Different activity plans also offer hiking trails, a via ferrata and ski slopes as separate options.

Nature

The Nucet–Vârtop tourist area lies partly within the Parcul Natural Apuseni.

Groapa Ruginoasă is an erosion-created ravine with red-violet quartzite layers and a gorge-like shape. The eroded area covers approximately 20 hectares; the ravine is more than 600 metres wide and over 100 metres deep.

Peştera Porţile Bihorului cave is located in the settlement of Băița, which belongs to the city of Nucet, in the Bihor Mountains of the Western Carpathians and in the Parcul Național Apuseni.

Culture and history

Băița has been documented since the 13th century.

Empress Maria Theresa is said to have selected the site and built the Roman Catholic church in Băița.

The Casa de Cultură „Ion Davideanu“ cultural centre in Nucet was built in the Soviet architectural style in the 1950s, renovated and completed in 2011.

Geographical location

National road DN 75 passes through Nucet, Băița and Vârtop and connects Ștei with Turda.
