Ljosland between cross-country ski trails and mountain paths

Ljosland lies in the mountains of southern Norway and is a gateway to Setesdal Vesthei. The high-mountain landscape, with peaks over 1,000 metres, defines the character of the place. In winter, a groomed or marked network of cross-country ski trails connects Ljosland with the mountain huts.

Paths also take centre stage in the warmer months. A marked summer route leads from Ljosland to the DNT cabin Lakkenstova. You can reach the cabin on foot from the car park at Ljosland Skisenter in about two hours; the round trip from there is about 14 kilometres. Treat the walking time and approximate distance as separate details when planning your route: they describe different aspects of the hike.

Hiking destinations nearby

Lakkenstova is an unstaffed DNT cabin in the southern Setesdalsheiene, above the tree line in rocky highlands. It lies north of Skoræ and Lisla Øyvatn. The cabin is unlocked and stocked with supplies. The main building has 26 beds, with another 10 in the emergency shelter. The shelter also has a separate room for dogs and their owners. These details help you assess the cabin as a specific hiking destination; they do not replace planning for the approximately 14-kilometre round trip.

Skoræ, at 1,041 metres, lies west of Ljosland. The summit is considered Norway’s southernmost mountain above 1,000 metres and the highest mountain in Åseral municipality. The marked trail runs from Farevatn through Farstøldalen to the trail junction at Skorstean. From there, it is another two kilometres to the summit. There is a car park at Ljosland Skisenter. For navigation, it is important to distinguish between the sections of the route described: the summit route starts in Farevatn, while the car park at the ski centre is listed separately as a parking option.

Another hiking destination nearby is Heiegarden Pytten. The farm belongs to Bygland municipality and is most easily reached from Ljosland and Langevatn. A hiking trail leads from Øvregardsbrua in Ljosland along Langevatn to the farm. At Fosstjønn, this trail becomes a clearly defined footpath. When planning your time in the area, this description helps you navigate the route and the transition between trail sections, but does not provide a distance.

Nature, swimming spots and garden

Swimming spots in Ljosland include the river by Ljosland Fjellstove, the waterfall between Tjønna and Langevatn, Ljoslandsvatnet by the cabin area in Kløystøl, and Grønlitjønn. These different bodies of water and locations give you several named destinations for spending time by the water. To choose a specific spot, you can use these place names and fit them into the rest of your day’s plans.

Ljosland Fjellhage is a free public garden featuring Norway’s mountain plants and is easily accessible to wheelchair users. The garden adds a distinct nature and plant-focused experience to the hiking destinations. Just after the entrance to Ljosland kapell, Ljosland Fjellstove is on the left. It offers peace and quiet, good food and beautiful natural surroundings.

Chapel and local history

Ljosland kapell stands high and alone in Ljoslandsgarden, overlooking Ljoslandsvatnet and surrounded by mighty mountains. It was consecrated by Bishop Kaare Støylen on 21 June 1959; the architect was Alf Erikstad. A disused schoolhouse near Lognavatn and new materials were used to build it. Trygve Roland and Tore Tveitstøl built the chapel. Its history and location make it a cultural destination in its own right in Ljosland.

The destinations listed are not all on the same route; when planning your day, refer to the starting points and route details given for each one.
