Østfold: Coast, Culture and Cycling
Accommodation in Østfold
Østfold stretches along the eastern side of the Oslofjord, from Moss to the Swedish border. When choosing your accommodation, you can focus on the experiences you want to shape your stay: coastal and island nature, cycling, fortified urban history or activities along the Halden Canal. The region offers different starting points for these experiences; first choose the focus that best suits your trip.
Coast, islands and nature
Ytre Hvaler National Park covers 354 km² of coastline and archipelago. It is Norway’s first marine national park; 96% of its area lies underwater. Visitors who want to explore the coastal landscape on foot will find a network of trails in the national park suitable for hiking. This includes the Kyststien coastal trail. Visitor information also includes details about kayaking tours in or near the national park. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between hiking trails and a possible kayaking experience, without assuming that both are part of the same route.
The Hvaler Islands also offer seaside experiences. The maritime landscape is therefore a distinct focus within the region.
Cycling trips in different formats
Two cycling options are described, each with a different format. Unionsleden is a 350-kilometre cycling route from Moss in Østfold to Karlstad in Värmland, Sweden. In Indre Østfold, it follows two routes. Its length and cross-border course make it a clearly defined option for a longer cycling trip; the two routes are the specifically noted feature of the section through Indre Østfold.
The Great Østfold Bike Tour can be ridden either as a relaxed, multi-day trip with stops and overnight stays, or as a shorter sporting challenge. This tour therefore offers an explicitly described choice between spending several days on the road and taking a shorter, more athletic option. If you are planning your accommodation around a cycling trip, this distinction can help you decide which tour format suits your stay.
Fortified towns and history
Gamlebyen was founded in 1567 by King Frederik II and is now considered the best-preserved fortified town in the Nordic region. The old town is also home to Scandinavia’s largest model railway exhibition. In Fredrikstad, a free city ferry takes passengers along the river from the city centre to the historic old town of Gamlebyen. Urban history, the model railway exhibition and a river trip are among the different ways to get to know Fredrikstad.
Another historical highlight is Fredriksten Fortress, which represents more than 350 years of living history. The exhibitions at the Fredriksten Museum cover the period from the 1640s through 1905. If you are interested in history, this timeframe can help you decide whether the museum exhibitions match your interests; the fortress itself is another historical landmark in Østfold.
The Halden Canal: water and heights
The Halden Canal is Norway’s oldest canal with locks. It opened in 1849 and is located in Østfold and Akershus. Canoes can be rented at the Brekke locks. The Via Ferrata Haldenkanalen offers a different experience there: it includes a 124.3-metre-long suspension bridge 15 metres above the Halden Canal, a climbing course and a 250-metre-long zipline. You can therefore choose between activities on the water and an experience involving heights and climbing during your stay.
Culture and nature on Søndre Jeløy
On Søndre Jeløy, Galleri F 15 is located at the Alby estate, in the heart of the landscape protection area. The Naturhuset, an information and interpretation centre for nature and cultural history, is also on Søndre Jeløy. Alby Kafé serves freshly baked pastries, including the famous Albykringla. These three places appeal to different interests: art, nature and cultural history, and pastries. In Sarpsborg, visitors can experience, explore and learn about the world of science at the INSPIRIA Science Center. This adds a science-focused attraction to the region’s nature and culture offerings.
