Ryfoss can be described as a place to stay based primarily on its hiking trails, summer activities and a cycling route. The village is home to a popular hiking destination and the direct starting point of a trail to Riddarberget; there is also a blue-marked cultural trail and a cycling route that passes through Ryfoss. This means you can include different types of outdoor activity in your plans for your stay.

Hiking and Routes in Ryfoss

The barbecue hut at Utsikten is a popular hiking destination in Ryfoss. The trail to Riddarberget starts right in the village. On the way back, the Riddarberget trail follows the footpath between Høre and Ryfoss. This gives you both a destination in Ryfoss and a specific route for the return journey. There are information boards along the Riddarberget trail.

Another named trail is the Høre/Ryfoss Cultural Trail, which is marked in blue. The name Høre/Ryfoss and the blue markings help distinguish the cultural trail from the Riddarberget trail.

Cyclists also have a specific route to follow: the Mjølkevegen cycling route via Slettefjellvegen passes through Høre, Ryfoss and Syndin. Ryfoss is explicitly part of the route. If you plan to include the route in your trip, check the route conditions for the season.

Nearby Destinations

The Slettefjellrunden circular route recommends taking a break at Sputrefossen and making a short detour on foot to the waterfall. You can park near the barrier. From there, the described route runs for just under 900 metres along Slettefjellvegen, followed by about 150 metres on an unmarked path to the waterfall. Both sections are important for finding your way: the first follows the road, while the second is on an unmarked path.

The Riddarberget trail in Høreskogen is also nearby. The narrow rocky gorge “Den løynde gangen” passes beneath the Riddarberget fortress site. At Riddarberget in Høreskogen, Vang, there are clear remains of a hillfort. These landscape and historical features add a different perspective on the area to the route information.

Summer Activities and Practical Information

In summer, you can take part in Stolpejakt in Ryfoss, an accessible activity suitable for everyone. As it is seasonal, it is best to check what is available each year.

In 2022, the sports club got its own disc golf course in the wooded area behind YX Ryfoss. If disc golf is relevant to your trip, check the details in advance. Ryfoss also has a bus stop.

Culture in the Wider Destination of Vang

The wider destination of Vang also offers cultural and historical points of interest. Høre Stave Church dates from around 1179 and features rich medieval wood carvings of dragons and lions. Øye Stave Church was probably built in the 12th century. It contains copies of medieval portals, which probably also date from the 12th century and feature rich animal ornamentation.

Vang Church houses a catechism board from 1620, which previously stood in Vang Stave Church. In 2012, the church also regained a collection of wooden figures, including apostles and Jesus; they had probably been in the former Vang Stave Church. These historical details belong to Vang and offer further cultural points of interest in the wider destination.
