Ringebu: Railway, Pilgrim Trail and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Ringebu
Ringebu offers rail travel, a historic village centre, and cycling and pilgrimage opportunities. The wider Ringebu destination also has cross-country ski trails at Venabygdsfjellet. When planning your trip, it is worth considering local attractions and regional activities separately.
Getting here by train
Ringebu railway station is on the Dovre Line. Trains run from there to Oslo S, Lillehammer, Dombås and Trondheim S. As a transport hub, the station provides shared services for trains, buses and taxis. Check the latest timetables and transport arrangements before travelling: destinations and service operations may change.
Village centre and seasonal markets
Ringebu’s centre is nationally recognised as one of Norway’s best-preserved village environments. Landsbyen Ringebu was founded as a trading centre in 1899. A gallery displays works by local photographers; the centre also has a pump track for younger and older cyclists.
During Torghandelsommer, Landsbyen Ringebu’s pedestrian street becomes a local marketplace on Saturdays throughout the summer. Market vendors offer, among other things, food from the surrounding area; the selection may vary by season. The annual Fårikålfestivalen, held in autumn, concludes in the centre of Ringebu with market vendors, exhibitors, activities, a ram judging event and entertainment throughout the day. If you would like to plan your stay around an event, check the latest dates and programme.
Stave church and pilgrim trail
Nearby is Ringebu Stave Church, built around 1220 and one of Norway’s 28 surviving stave churches. The Pilgrims’ Way passes by the church and Prestegard, follows the Panoramaveien through the centre of Ringebu, and continues north. The first section of the Ringebu–Otta pilgrim route covers 12 kilometres from Ringebu to Hundorp; it starts at the stave church and reaches Vålerbrua in the centre. The full route is 63 kilometres long and takes four days. The 12-kilometre stage therefore requires a different amount of time than the four-day route as a whole.
Cycling and regional winter activities
There are mountain bike trails in the forests near the centre of Ringebu. Værfast maintains and develops them under agreements with the relevant landowner associations; these agreements may change. Værfast also offers support on a cycling trip through a guide or instruction. Check before travelling whether this service is available for your dates. Full-suspension e-bikes are available to rent at Sport 1 Ringebu; confirm availability in advance for this as well. SykkelVIKU is an annual cycling festival held in Ringebu in August. Exact dates may change, so it is a good idea to check the latest event dates.
The wider Ringebu destination includes Venabygdsfjellet, a mountain area between Gudbrandsdalen and Østerdalen. Venabygdsfjellet has extensive cross-country ski trails stretching for many miles in all directions. The Troll-løypa starts there.
