Beitostølen in Norway is a winter sports resort with a centrally located ski area and a second ski centre in Raudalen. The area also offers a network of more than 300 kilometres of groomed cross-country trails of varying difficulty. When choosing accommodation, keep the two alpine areas distinct: the central location of one does not mean Raudalen is within walking distance. For your travel dates, check the specific lifts, pistes, trails and routes to your accommodation against the latest information from the operators.

Key facts

  • The central ski area is a few minutes’ walk from restaurants and ski rental.
  • Raudalen offers more challenging runs and popular off-piste options when powder conditions are suitable.
  • More than 300 kilometres of groomed cross-country trails of varying difficulty are described as accessible from Beitostølen.
  • The ski stadium benefits from snow storage and is often among the first facilities to be groomed.
  • A ski school offers lessons for adults and children in several alpine and Nordic disciplines.

Two alpine areas, different choices

The ski area in the centre of Beitostølen is just a few minutes’ walk from restaurants, ski rental and other facilities. This can be useful for travellers who want short distances between their accommodation, dining options and a central access point. Raudalen Ski Centre is described as a more challenging alternative. Its off-piste runs are particularly highlighted when a powder-snow alert has been issued. This is neither a guarantee of deep snow nor a recommendation to ski beyond marked pistes without checking the terrain, weather, avalanche conditions and your own experience. Check lift and piste operations for the day.

Beitostølen Ski School lists private and group lessons for children and adults in alpine skiing, snowboarding, telemark, cross-country skiing and sit-skiing. This range may be relevant for a mixed-ability travel group; it does not guarantee a place on a particular course, a specific lesson time or suitability for every person. At the Welcome Centre, Beitostølen Rental rents equipment for alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, touring and backcountry skiing, randonnée and snowboarding. Cross-country skiing and the ski stadium

According to the tourism source consulted, the trail network from Beitostølen comprises more than 300 kilometres of groomed routes of varying difficulty. This figure describes the network, not the kilometres open or freshly groomed on your travel date. The Beitostølen Ski Stadium uses a snow-storage project and is therefore often among the first facilities to have groomed ski trails. “Often” does not mean a fixed season opening date or a guarantee of snow. The stadium also hosts annual events such as Beitosprinten; event days may affect general access. For summer and autumn opening, the operator also notes exceptions when the venue is closed for private events.

As another winter activity, one provider describes snow rafting in an inflatable boat down a 450-metre snow-covered run. It is offered online only on selected days during the season. If you want to plan this activity, check the date, participation requirements and actual availability rather than assuming it is offered every day.

Getting there, the village and accommodation

Beitostølen is accessible by bus, including the Valdres Ekspressen from Oslo and the Øst-Vest Ekspressen from Bergen. Timetables and stops may change. The old Liasælet in the village centre was built in the 18th century from pine felled locally, giving your stay a cultural and historical dimension. By contrast, Beitostølen Summer Park and the Mountain Bike trails of the Trail Arena are warm-season attractions, not winter pistes. The overview of Øystre Slidrhelps put the area in context. Choose accommodation based on the access point you actually want for the central area, connections to Raudalen or a suitable cross-country trail; the village name alone is no substitute for a map.
