Nybergsund: History, Art and Canoe Tour
Accommodation in Nybergsund
Nybergsund offers clear points of interest for culture and water activities: Kongeparken commemorates the events of 1940, Tjønna is a swimming spot, and a canoe tour runs along the Trysilelva. This lets you decide what matters for your stay and check the specific accommodation location to see how it fits your plans.
Kongeparken and the history of 1940
Kongeparken is in Nybergsund at the historic site where King Haakon hid from German bombing raids on 11 April 1940. A memorial stele in the park commemorates the bombing of Nybergsund in 1940. Kongeparken is also the 1,000-year site of Trysil Municipality. Its historical significance therefore encompasses both Haakon’s refuge at this site and the commemoration of the bombing of the village.
Today, the park is home to four artworks by Vebjørn Sand. Together with the memorial stele, they give Kongeparken a cultural significance that goes beyond the commemoration of a single event. You can explore the park on foot at your own pace. So if you want to learn about Nybergsund’s history, you’ll find a tangible historic site and artworks here in one place.
Swimming and a canoe tour on the Trysilelva
Tjønna is a popular swimming spot in Nybergsund. It is located north of the village on Road 26. A canoe tour on the Trysilelva covers about four kilometres between Trysil Hyttegrend and Tjønna. This means two different interests come together at Tjønna: the swimming spot and a canoe tour along a stretch of the river.
On the canoe tour, the river flows steadily and calmly, so very little paddling is needed. The clear water is home to trout and grayling. This calm character of the river is the most useful point of reference when considering the activity. It sets the described tour apart from a visit to the swimming spot: here, the focus is on a stretch of river, while at Tjønna, it is on swimming.
Other places in the surrounding area
Gjetsjøen is another swimming spot between Nybergsund and Østby. The bathing area is clearly visible from Road 25, about twelve kilometres east of Nybergsund in the direction of Østby. Its location differs from that of Tjønna: Tjønna is north of the village on Road 26, while Gjetsjøen is east of it on Road 25. If you’re comparing swimming spots, you can take these two different locations in the surrounding area into account.
There are also historically significant buildings in and around Nybergsund: Karlslund and Heggelund. Karlslund, also known as Kongsgården, was an old post station and was operated as a hotel in 1940. Its history adds a former stop on the travel route to the picture of the municipality. The information about its operation as a hotel refers to 1940.
Winter holidays in the wider Trysil destination
For a winter holiday, it’s important to distinguish between Nybergsund and Trysil. The wider Trysil destination has four interconnected ski areas. SkiStar Trysil has 71 groomed pistes and 41 modern lifts. These ski area features belong to the wider Trysil region; seasonal operating information may vary, so it’s a good idea to check the latest information before travelling.
The local cultural and water attractions offer a different way to plan your stay: Kongeparken represents history and art, Tjønna offers a swimming spot, and the Trysilelva offers a peaceful canoe tour.
