Discover Kongsberg: Mining History and Culture
Accommodation in Kongsberg
Kongsberg is a good choice for a trip focused on mining history and culture. Museums, historic buildings and special experiences related to the silver mines offer different ways to explore the city’s history. There are also opportunities for exercise and leisure. When planning, consider whether you mainly want to explore museums and architecture or also take in the landscape and outdoor activities.
Mining History and the Silver Mines
The Norwegian Mining Museum (Norsk Bergverksmuseum) presents the history of mining in Kongsberg over a period of 335 years. Its permanent exhibitions are housed in the former smelting works of the Kongsberg Silver Mines in the centre of Kongsberg. The setting connects the museum’s themes with a historic building, so you can explore different aspects of mining together rather than separately.
The Kongens gruve, the largest mine in the silver mines, is also part of the site. A mine train takes visitors 2,300 metres through the Christian VII adit to the mine. The journey is a tangible part of the visitor experience and may be relevant when planning your day. During the season, the Aktivitetsplassen at the Sølvgruvene offers daily demonstrations of fire-setting, a historic method for breaking rock. This adds a practical demonstration to the story of mining.
The Norwegian Mining Museum also includes Kvarten Park, which can be used for leisure. You can combine your museum visit with time in the park if you’d like to spend time outdoors as well as see the exhibitions.
Church, Organ and Historic Inscriptions
Kongsberg Church (Kongsberg kirke) is Norway’s largest Baroque church. Its richly decorated Rococo interior features glass chandeliers, ceiling paintings and the Gloger organ. The organ is considered Scandinavia’s largest historic Baroque organ and has 42 stops and between 2,000 and 3,000 pipes. Visitors particularly interested in church art, organs or historic interiors will find several points of interest here. Tours of the church can be reserved by phone.
Another piece of the city’s history can be found at Kronene i Håvet: these are royal monograms carved into a rock face in Kongsberg. The tradition began with King Frederick IV’s visit in June 1704. The site shows how a single historic event can be connected to a visible landmark in the cityscape.
Open-Air Museum and Leisure Activities
Lågdalsmuseet is an open-air museum with 32 listed historic buildings. The grounds include Glitre gård, an estate that served as the residence of several mining officials from Kongsberg. The museum also includes Norway’s only specialist museum of optics and a museum about the Norwegian resistance movement. This variety is useful if you’d like to explore different topics during a visit, from building and everyday history to optics and resistance.
Lågdalsmuseet also has activities for younger visitors, including a playground. In summer, Telemark cattle, Døle horses, goats with kids and sheep with lambs graze in the meadows. The season matters for this animal experience, so include it in your plans only if you’re travelling in summer.
For outdoor exercise, the hiking lift at Skimore Kongsberg provides access to forests and hiking opportunities. Skimore Kongsberg also has Formula G, a gravity-powered track with non-motorised vehicles. It runs along a paved course with banked turns. These two activities appeal to different interests: the hiking lift provides access to hiking opportunities, while Formula G is a ride on a purpose-built track.
