Eplény: Slopes, Snowpark and Forest
Accommodation in Eplény
Eplény combines winter sports with opportunities for hiking and mountain biking. Síaréna Vibe Park has 16 ski slopes for skiers and snowboarders.
Slopes and Snowpark
The 16 slopes give a clear overview of what is available for skiers and snowboarders. The Eplény Snowpark is also located in the Síaréna area, on slopes 6 and 7. It has freestyle features and jumps; the park’s operation depends on the amount of snow. Before travelling, it is advisable to check the current availability of the slopes and take snow conditions into account for the snowpark.
Visitors with different interests can consider these options separately: the slopes are for skiing and snowboarding, while the snowpark is for freestyle. These details describe different options within the winter sports offering, not the facilities of any particular accommodation.
Forest and Mountain Biking
Opened in 2003, the Ámos-hegyi Pihenőerdő covers 230 hectares. Hikers can use an educational trail, a lookout tower and a fitness trail; there are also forest playgrounds. Alongside the slopes, the forest offers its own places to visit outdoors. As current access conditions may vary, it is best to check them before your visit.
Mountain bikers will also find named trails at Síaréna Vibe Park: the Family Flowline is 1.3 kilometres long, and the N1 Flowy Enduro is 1.2 kilometres long. These are two specific options that differ in their stated length. As the trail offering may change, it is advisable to check before travelling.
Getting There and Choosing Accommodation
Eplény can be reached by bus and train. If you plan to travel by either of these modes, factor in the connection to your specific accommodation location. The fact that the area is generally accessible does not indicate how far an individual accommodation is from the slopes, forest or trails.
When looking for a ski hotel or other accommodation, you can base your choice on your planned activities: is skiing and snowboarding your main priority, or would you also like to consider the hiking and mountain biking options? Another local point of interest is the Szent Bernát Chapel: Zirc Abbey had the chapel in Eplény built in the 1790s.
More to Explore in the Wider Lake Balaton North Destination
The wider Lake Balaton North destination offers other distinct points of interest. Boat trips are available at the Tapolcai-tavasbarlang, which also has the guided exhibition “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave is part of a cave system beneath the town that has so far been explored over a length of 14.6 kilometres.
Another landscape landmark in the area is Hegyestű, a 337-metre-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló. It exposes the inside of a basalt volcano that was active around 8 million years ago. A lookout on the western edge of the quarry site offers visitors a panoramic board for identifying the surrounding hills; Hegyestű also has a rock garden featuring characteristic rock types of Transdanubia. These regional places offer additional points of reference beyond Eplény without replacing Eplény’s local attractions.
